Suratul Luqman Verses 16-18: Meanings and Lessons
Introduction to Suratul Luqman
Suratul Luqman is the 31st chapter of the Holy Qur’an. It is named after a wise man called Luqman, whose valuable advice to his son is mentioned in the Surah. These verses provide guidance on important aspects of belief and good character.
Quranic Reading
- Suratul Luqman (Chapter 31) Verses 16-18.
Memory Verse
“O my son, establish prayer and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” (Suratul Luqman 31:17)
Meaning of Suratul Luqman Verses 16-18
Verse 16:
“O my son, indeed if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed and it is [hidden] in a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.”
This verse teaches that Allah’s knowledge is absolute and encompasses everything, no matter how small or hidden. He is aware of every action, good or bad, and will bring it to account.
Verse 17:
“O my son, establish prayer and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.”
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing Salah (prayer), promoting good deeds, discouraging evil, and enduring hardships with patience. These are considered strong and determined actions.
Verse 18:
“And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”
This verse advises against arrogance and pride. It teaches to be humble, to treat people with respect, and to avoid showing off or boasting about oneself.
