Lesson Content/Board Summary
SURATUL LUQMAN
Introduction to Suratul Luqman
Suratul Luqman is the 31st chapter of the Holy Qur’an. It is named after Luqman, a wise man mentioned in the Qur’an, whose advice to his son forms a significant part of the chapter. These verses teach us about fundamental Islamic beliefs and good conduct.
Verse 12: Gratitude to Allah
The teacher writes the Arabic text of Verse 12 on the board and recites it.
Arabic Text: (Teacher writes the actual Arabic script for Surah Luqman, Verse 12)
Transliteration: Wa laqad aatainaa Luqmaan al-hikmata anishkur lillaah. Wa man yashkur fa innamaa yashkuru linafsihi, wa man kafara fa inna Allaha Ghaniyyun Hameed.
Meaning: “And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom, [saying], “Be grateful to Allah.” And whoever is grateful – his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful – then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”
Lessons from Verse 12:
- Allah grants wisdom to those He chooses.
- Gratitude (Shukr) to Allah is a great virtue.
- Being grateful benefits the person who is grateful, not Allah.
- Allah is self-sufficient and does not need our gratitude.
Verse 13: Avoiding Shirk (Associating partners with Allah)
The teacher writes the Arabic text of Verse 13 on the board and recites it.
Arabic Text: (Teacher writes the actual Arabic script for Surah Luqman, Verse 13)
Transliteration: Wa idh qaala Luqmaanu li-bnihi wa huwa ya’izuhoo yaa bunayya laa tushrik billaah. Inna ash-shirka la-dhulmun ‘adheem.
Meaning: “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, “O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice.”
Lessons from Verse 13:
- It is important for parents to advise their children about religion.
- Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the greatest sin.
- Worshipping anything or anyone alongside Allah is a grave injustice.
- Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) is the foundation of Islam.
Verse 14: Kindness and Obedience to Parents
The teacher writes the Arabic text of Verse 14 on the board and recites it.
Arabic Text: (Teacher writes the actual Arabic script for Surah Luqman, Verse 14)
Transliteration: Wa wassaynal insaana bi-waalidaihi hamalat-hu ummuhu wahnan ‘alaa wahnin wa fisaaluhu fee ‘aamaini anishkur lee wa liwaalidaik. Ilayya al-maseer.
Meaning: “And We had enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”
Lessons from Verse 14:
- Allah commands us to be kind and dutiful to our parents.
