Exploring Microsoft Word

Starting Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a word processing application used to create, edit, view, and print text documents. To start Microsoft Word:

  • Click on the ‘Start’ button (usually at the bottom-left corner of the screen).
  • Navigate to ‘All Programs’ or ‘All apps’.
  • Locate and click on ‘Microsoft Office’ folder.
  • Select ‘Microsoft Word’ from the list of applications.

Components of the Word Window

When Microsoft Word opens, several components make up its window, each with a specific function:

  • Title Bar: Displays the name of the document and the program (e.g., Document1 – Word).
  • Quick Access Toolbar: Contains frequently used commands like Save, Undo, and Redo.
  • Ribbon: A set of toolbars at the top of the window, organized into tabs (e.g., Home, Insert, Page Layout) and groups (e.g., Font, Paragraph).
  • File Tab (Backstage View): Provides access to file-related functions such as New, Open, Save, Print, and Options.
  • Document Area: The main white space where text is typed and edited.
  • Scroll Bars: Used to move through the document vertically or horizontally.
  • Status Bar: Located at the bottom, displays information like page number, word count, and zoom level.
  • View Buttons: Allows changing the document’s view mode (e.g., Read Mode, Print Layout, Web Layout).
