What is a Spreadsheet?

Loading MS Excel Software
To load MS Excel software, follow these steps:
- Click on the Start button.
- Go to All Programs.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Click on Microsoft Excel (e.g., Microsoft Excel 2016).
Components of MS Excel
MS Excel has several key components that facilitate data organization and manipulation:
Workbook
A workbook is the entire Excel file. It is the primary file type in Excel and can contain one or more worksheets. The default name for a new workbook is Book1.
Worksheet
A worksheet (also known as a spreadsheet) is a single page within an Excel workbook. It is made up of a grid of rows and columns where data is entered. A new workbook typically opens with one or more worksheets, usually named Sheet1, Sheet2, etc.
Cell
A cell is the intersection of a row and a column in a worksheet. Each cell has a unique address (e.g., A1, B5), which is formed by combining its column letter and row number. Cells are where individual pieces of data are stored.
Cell Range
A cell range is a group of selected cells in a worksheet. It can be a contiguous block of cells (e.g., A1:C5) or non-adjacent cells. A cell range is useful for applying operations to multiple cells at once.
Name Box
The Name Box is a display area located to the left of the formula bar. It shows the address of the currently active cell or the name of a selected cell range if a name has been assigned to it.
Formula Bar
The Formula Bar is located below the ribbon and above the worksheet grid. It displays the content of the active cell. It is also used for entering or editing data, formulas, and functions within the active cell.
