Union Bank Renovates Lagos School Through CSR Initiative
Union Bank of Nigeria has improved learning conditions at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project carried out under its employee volunteering programme, UnionCares.
The project, executed by members of the bank’s 2022–2024 Management Trainee cohort, reflects Union Bank’s commitment to combining employee development with meaningful community impact. The initiative focused on upgrading critical school facilities and improving the learning environment for pupils and teachers.
As part of the intervention, the bank constructed new toilet facilities for both students and staff, renovated classrooms, provided a functional borehole to improve access to clean water, installed a generating set to support electricity supply, and donated educational materials to aid teaching and learning activities.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, described the project as an example of how employee-driven initiatives can positively transform communities when given the right support.
She explained that the management trainees identified the needs of the school and successfully carried out a project that would directly benefit children and teachers in the community. According to her, the UnionCares programme was created to channel the passion, creativity, and skills of employees into projects that improve lives and strengthen underserved communities.
Aluko also noted that the initiative represents a modern approach to corporate social responsibility, where organisations move beyond simple donations and encourage employees to actively participate in solving community challenges. She added that empowering young professionals to design and execute social impact projects helps build stronger workplace culture while delivering long-term benefits to society.
Union Bank stated that the Ebute-Metta project aligns with its broader efforts to improve educational infrastructure, especially in underserved communities where access to clean water, proper sanitation, stable electricity, and quality learning environments remains limited.
School administrators and residents reportedly welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and necessary due to the poor state of facilities that had previously affected teaching and learning activities.
The bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting community development initiatives across Nigeria, particularly in the areas of education, youth empowerment, and social welfare. It also stated that programmes like UnionCares are designed to make corporate responsibility a core part of employee experience and institutional values rather than a one-time charitable activity.
Union Bank added that it plans to expand similar interventions to more communities across the country, with a strong focus on sustainability, inclusiveness, and measurable social impact.
