The Nigerian Navy has commissioned and handed over a newly upgraded Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre and several renovated facilities at Saint Peters Blessed Primary School in Orile-Agege, Lagos, as part of efforts to improve education and staff welfare.
The project was delivered under the Chief of the Naval Staff’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Project initiative and was executed in honour of the Flag Officer Commanding Special Operations Command, Rear Admiral Olusanya Oladipo Soyemi.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the intervention demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to supporting community development and strengthening relationships between the military and civilians. He noted that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and provides an opportunity for senior naval officers to contribute meaningfully to societal growth.
Represented at the event by the Admiral Superintendent of the Naval Ordnance Depot, Rear Admiral Patrick Meteke, the Naval Chief praised Rear Admiral Soyemi for successfully implementing the project and encouraged the school community to maintain the facilities properly.
The intervention brought significant improvements to the school’s learning environment. The ICT classroom was renovated and equipped with 15 desktop computers, internet connectivity, air conditioners, tables, and chairs. To ensure a reliable power supply, a 4.3-kilowatt solar-powered inverter system with lithium-ion batteries was also installed.
In addition to the ICT upgrades, the project included the construction of a new staff toilet, renovation of existing pupil toilet facilities, and rehabilitation of the school’s borehole alongside improvements to its water supply infrastructure.
Rear Admiral Soyemi described the initiative as a reflection of the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to both national service and community development. He explained that a detailed needs assessment was conducted with the support of the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and school management before the project commenced, ensuring that the most pressing needs of the school were addressed.
He also expressed appreciation to the Orile-Agege LCDA, the Local Government Education Authority, and other supporters who contributed to the successful completion of the project.
Representing the Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, the Vice Chairman, Wale Fayemi, commended the Nigerian Navy for its people-focused initiatives and praised the investment in education and youth development within the community.
The Head Teacher of Saint Peters Blessed Primary School, Mrs. Aderonke Folashade Oke, described the intervention as a transformative development that would greatly enhance teaching, learning, and staff welfare. She noted that the upgraded facilities would create a more conducive environment for both pupils and teachers.
The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, community leaders, military personnel, members of the Nigerian Navy Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA), teachers, parents, pupils, and other stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the achievement.
The project highlights the growing importance of partnerships between educational institutions and public organisations in creating better learning opportunities for Nigerian children.
