The Abia State Government is set to commission a newly completed smart school as part of its efforts to modernize basic education and provide learners with access to technology-driven learning environments.

Governor Alex Otti is expected to officially inaugurate the Umuomaiukwu Smart School, located in Umuomaiukwu community, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area. The facility is one of the state’s flagship digital learning projects aimed at improving the quality of public basic education.

Speaking after the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, explained that the school was previously known as Umuomaiukwu Community Primary School before being upgraded into a modern smart school equipped to support digital teaching and learning.

According to the commissioner, the project reflects the state’s commitment to transforming the education sector through innovation, technology, and world-class learning infrastructure. The initiative is expected to create a more engaging learning experience for pupils while preparing them with digital skills needed for the future.

In addition to the education project, the commissioner announced that the state government has established a Planning and Implementation Committee for the Nigeria Agri-Business and Agri-Industry Development Initiative (NAADI).

The committee includes representatives from key ministries such as Trade and Commerce, Agriculture, Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), alongside officials from the Bank of Industry, the Bank of Agriculture, and national research institutions.

Kanu noted that the partnership between the Federal Government and Abia State is designed to strengthen agriculture, agro-processing, and agribusiness development, helping to diversify the state’s economy beyond the oil sector.

He added that Abia will become the ninth state to implement the initiative, while the official inauguration date for the programme will be announced after consultations between state and federal government officials.

The commissioning of the Umuomaiukwu Smart School highlights Abia State’s growing investment in digital education and its broader vision of equipping public schools with modern facilities that improve teaching, learning, and educational outcomes.
