Lesson Content/Board Summary
Trading Profit and Loss Account
Net Sales (Where There Is Returns-Inwards)
Net sales refer to the actual revenue a business earns after deducting any goods returned by customers. Returns-inwards reduce the total sales recorded, showing the true sales figure received by the business.
The following are the components of net sales:
- Gross sales
- Returns-inwards (sales returns)
- Net sales = Gross sales − Returns-inwards
Determination of Net Profit or Loss
Net profit or loss is determined after deducting all expenses from the gross profit. A positive result shows profit while a negative result indicates loss.
The following are the items considered when determining net profit or loss:
- Gross profit
- Expenses such as salaries, rent, electricity, and transport
- Net profit or loss = Gross profit − Total expenses
Rules for Constructing Profit and Loss Account
The profit and loss account follows a structured format that shows all income and expenses to determine the net profit or loss for a period.
These include:
- All expenses are recorded on the debit side
- All incomes other than sales are recorded on the credit side
- Net profit is transferred to the capital account
- Net loss is deducted from the capital account
