What started as a school-level spelling competition at My Dream Stead School in Ajegunle, Lagos, has given one young learner an opportunity to experience Nigeria’s capital city beyond the classroom.
Precious Ochulor, the school’s Senior Prefect and maiden Internal Spelling Bee champion, was rewarded with an all-expenses-paid educational tour of Abuja.
As part of the prize, Ochulor visited important government institutions, cultural landmarks and other notable locations while also meeting prominent personalities.
Spelling Bee Champion Visits National Assembly
One of the major highlights of the tour was Ochulor’s visit to the National Assembly, where she was received by Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District.
The visit exposed the young scholar to practical aspects of leadership, governance and lawmaking. Such experiences can help students better understand concepts that are often taught theoretically in subjects such as Civic Education, Government and Social Studies.
The opportunity also gave Ochulor a closer look at how legislative responsibilities contribute to the administration of the country.
Learns About Nigeria’s Policing System
The spelling bee champion also visited the Police Service Commission, where she was received by DIG (rtd) and Commissioner II, Barrister Taiwo Lakanu.
During the visit, she was introduced to the commission’s mandate, structure and role within Nigeria’s policing system.
The experience provided another opportunity for the young learner to connect classroom knowledge with real-life institutions and public service.
Tour Includes Abuja Landmarks and Cultural Sites
Beyond government institutions, Ochulor’s itinerary included several notable locations in Abuja.
She visited the Art and Craft Market, Abuja City Gate, an Internally Displaced Persons camp and Ceddi Plaza, among other places.
The diverse itinerary exposed her to different aspects of Nigeria’s culture, society and capital-city environment.
Student Appreciates School for the Opportunity
Reflecting on the experience, Ochulor expressed gratitude to My Dream Stead School for giving her the opportunity to learn beyond the traditional classroom environment.
She said the chance to meet prominent personalities and visit important locations had taught her valuable lessons that she would continue to remember.
For the young spelling bee champion, the trip therefore served as both a reward for her achievement and an educational experience.
School Says Practical Exposure Can Inspire Students
The school’s proprietor, Ambassador Isaac Success Omoyele, said the initiative was part of the school’s commitment to exposing learners to experiences that could broaden their ambitions.
According to him, a child’s location should not determine the size of their dreams. He explained that this philosophy influenced the decision to take Precious from her school environment in Lagos to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Omoyele added that the school’s educational programmes are designed to complement classroom teaching with practical experiences that can inspire students and broaden their understanding of the world around them.
Educational Tours Can Support Classroom Learning
The Abuja tour demonstrates how educational experiences outside the classroom can complement formal teaching and give students opportunities to see concepts in real-life settings.
For Ochulor, the experience went beyond winning a spelling competition. It introduced her to aspects of leadership, governance, public service, culture and community life while giving her an opportunity to interact with people and institutions she might otherwise have only encountered through textbooks.
The tour was supported by Luxuriate Travels and Tours, Hadassah Dream Events and House 575.
For the young spelling bee champion, the Abuja trip will likely remain a memorable part of her school experience and an example of how academic achievement can open doors to new learning opportunities.
