A student from St. Lawrence Metropolitan College has emerged as the winner of the 2025 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee, bringing national recognition to her school and earning a major education support package.

The winner, Oreoluwa Alayande, triumphed in the nationwide competition organised by MTN Nigeria, outperforming thousands of students from across the country. As part of the reward, MTN announced a ₦10 million educational intervention for her school aimed at strengthening technology-driven learning.

The support package will be used to upgrade the school’s laboratory and improve digital learning facilities. It includes the installation of 10 5G routers, 10 new laptops, broadband devices and other educational tools to enhance students’ access to modern technology in the classroom.

During the presentation ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, MTN’s Sales and Trade Development Manager in Ekiti, Chinyere Ikechi, said the company decided to invest in the school as a way of recognising the student’s exceptional academic performance and encouraging educational excellence.

According to her, the competition attracted thousands of entries from pupils nationwide, with Alayande standing out due to her strong spelling ability, confidence, and academic discipline.

Ikechi also announced that the 14-year-old champion will have the opportunity to serve as a one-day Chief Executive Officer at MTN’s Lagos headquarters on March 11. She will also represent the brand as an mPulse ambassador for one year, inspiring other young learners across Nigeria.

She explained that beyond celebrating the winner, the organisation wanted to support the institution that helped nurture such talent.

The intervention project delivered to the school also includes 10 air conditioners for the computer laboratory and a 30kV lithium inverter battery system, designed to ensure reliable power supply for digital learning activities.

Reacting to the development, the school’s Head Teacher, Lawrence Oluwafemi, described the support from MTN as a significant boost to teaching and learning. He added that the school management has decided to award Alayande a scholarship covering the rest of her education at the college.

Speaking after the recognition, the SSS2 student expressed appreciation to her teachers, parents, and MTN for their encouragement. She said participating in the spelling competition helped improve students’ vocabulary, confidence, and love for learning.

Education stakeholders say initiatives like the MTN mPulse Spelling Bee continue to play an important role in promoting literacy, academic competition, and digital learning opportunities for students across Nigeria.
