Nigeria has made history on the global academic stage after Team Nigeria won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

The remarkable victory came during Nigeria’s first-ever participation in the prestigious international spelling competition, with the country’s representatives outperforming teams from several nations to claim the top prize.

The Nigerian team consisted of Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.

The organisers of the Nigeria Spelling Bee congratulated the students on their outstanding achievement, describing the victory as a proud moment for the country and a major milestone in Nigeria’s academic excellence journey.

Ar-Raheem International College also celebrated the success of its students, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, noting their impressive performances throughout the competition, especially during the final stages.

Maryam Yusuf Shines on the International Stage

Among the team’s standout performers was 14-year-old Maryam Yusuf, whose academic journey has continued to inspire many across Nigeria.

Before the World Cup, Maryam had already gained continental recognition at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe. Although she was a JSS 3 student, she competed in the senior category and impressed judges by correctly spelling 17 out of 20 words within one minute during the speed round.

Her exceptional performance helped Nigeria finish second in the team category at the African championship, laying the foundation for the country’s historic success at the global competition.

Maryam’s accomplishments have made her a role model for young learners, particularly girls, demonstrating that dedication, discipline, and hard work can create opportunities for international recognition.

Journey to World Cup Glory

Team Nigeria’s road to Shanghai began with excellent performances at the Nigeria Spelling Bee competition, where the students first earned national recognition.

Their success continued at the African Spelling Bee Championship, where Oluwadamilola Adeolu emerged as the Junior Champion. These achievements qualified the team for the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup, where they eventually secured the gold medal.
