The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has intensified efforts to improve education by distributing smart digital tablets and core textbooks to over 600,000 public secondary school students across the state.

This initiative, under the Hope for Digital Education programme, is aimed at expanding access to modern learning tools and reinforcing Lagos State’s reputation as a leading hub for digital education in Nigeria.

According to the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the programme is part of the third pillar of the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S development agenda, which focuses on education and technology as critical drivers of economic growth in the 21st century.

The initiative also aligns with the national agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes human capital development and improved educational standards nationwide.

Speaking during the rollout, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the programme is designed to create opportunities for students by providing them with the tools needed to succeed in a digital world. He noted that combining technology with strong foundational literacy will help learners not only acquire knowledge but also develop essential life skills.

Education Commissioner Jamiu Alli-Balogun also highlighted the importance of integrating innovation with traditional learning methods to ensure that students are fully prepared for future challenges.

The distributed tablets come equipped with data-enabled SIM cards and are powered by the Roducate learning platform. The platform provides access to curriculum-based lessons, educational videos, mock examinations, and life skills content, enabling students to learn both in and outside the classroom.

When combined with simplified core textbooks, the initiative ensures continuous access to quality educational resources, helping to reinforce classroom teaching and improve overall learning outcomes.

Early indicators suggest positive results. Lagos public secondary school students recorded an 80 percent pass rate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in 2021, with expectations of even better performance as the programme expands.

With more than 600,000 students set to benefit, the initiative promotes inclusive education while also introducing performance-based incentives for students, teachers, and parents.

Through this blend of digital innovation and accessible learning materials, Lagos State continues to set a strong benchmark for educational excellence in Nigeria.
