Fed Govt Inaugurates Katsina Smart School, Promises Stronger Education Reforms
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector with the inauguration of the Katsina State Smart Model Secondary School located in Radda, Katsina State.
The modern school project was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, alongside the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda.
According to a statement released by the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the minister, the smart school represents more than just a physical structure. The project was described as a major investment in innovation, technology-driven learning, and human capital development aimed at preparing Nigerian students for global competitiveness.
The minister praised Governor Radda’s leadership and educational reforms under the Build-Your-Future Blueprint, noting that the state has made significant progress in expanding access to education, improving school infrastructure, and supporting teacher development.
Dr. Alausa explained that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supports the goals of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
He stated that the reforms focus on improving access to education, strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM), and expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes across the country. The initiative also promotes inclusive education, digital governance, and infrastructure development.
The minister revealed that states have accessed more than N106 billion in Universal Basic Education Commission matching grants within the last 18 months. He added that over N22 billion has been invested in teacher development programmes nationwide, while more than N2 billion has been distributed to School-Based Management Committees.
According to him, the Federal Government has renovated over 10,000 classrooms, trained approximately 978,000 teachers, and distributed more than 7.8 million textbooks to schools across Nigeria.
He further disclosed that the revised Primary Education Curriculum is already being implemented nationwide, while a new Secondary Education Curriculum will begin in the next academic session.
Dr. Alausa also announced that funding had been secured for the HOPE Education Programme to improve educational quality, increase access to learning opportunities, and strengthen institutional capacity.
Speaking on skills acquisition, the minister said over 160,000 young Nigerians are currently receiving training in more than 1,200 TVET centres nationwide. He added that over one million applications were received during the latest phase of the programme.
The Federal Government is also pushing forward with digital reforms in education through the introduction of a cloud-based Annual School Census system and the Learner Identification Number (LIN), both designed to improve transparency, planning, and accountability in the sector.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing the number of out-of-school children through stronger collaboration with state governments. He described the Katsina Smart Model Secondary School as a national example of smart education and a key step toward transforming learning in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Governor Radda said his administration established the smart school because education remains one of the government’s most important responsibilities to citizens. He assured residents that every zone in Katsina State would continue to benefit from improved access to quality education.
The governor added that his administration has introduced major reforms since assuming office, all aimed at improving the standard of education across the state.
