Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Cognitive Domain: Identify at least five Nigerian heroes and heroines and explain their contributions to Nigeria’s development.
  • Affective domain: Appreciate the importance of the contributions made by these heroes and heroines.
  • Psychomotor Domain: Mention one hero or heroine they admire and draw a symbol representing their contributions.
  • Social Domain: Discuss how the contributions of these heroes and heroines have impacted their community positively.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

pupils already know about Chief Nana of Itsekiri and Queen Amina of Zaria and can mention their major contributions.


Lesson Content

Major Contributions of Heroes and Heroines to the Development of Nigeria

Nigerian heroes and heroines played vital roles in shaping the nation’s history. They fought for independence, unity, and development across various sectors including education, politics, women’s rights, and culture.

Nnamdi Azikiwe

Nnamdi Azikiwe,known as the “Father of nigerian Nationalism,” was instrumental in Nigeria’s independence in 1960. He was the first President of Nigeria and played a key role in uniting the country.

Queen Amina of Zaria

Queen Amina was a warrior queen of Zaria (now part of northern Nigeria). She is remembered for her military exploits and for promoting trade and prosperity in her kingdom.

Obafemi Awolowo

Obafemi Awolowo was a visionary leader who introduced free primary education in the Western Region. he advocated for democracy and was a key figure in the political development of Nigeria.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a passionate advocate for women’s rights and education. She played a major role in Nigeria’s fight for independence and was the mother of the renowned Afrobeat musician fela Kuti.

Herbert Macaulay

Herbert Macaulay was a Nigerian nationalist and political leader. He played a meaningful role in opposing British colonial rule and advocating for self-governance.

Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe was one of Nigeria’s most famous writers.His novel “Things Fall Apart” highlighted the impact of colonialism on customary african societies. He contributed to the intellectual and cultural development of Nigeria.

Margaret Ekpo

Margaret Ekpo was a Nigerian women’s rights activist and politician. She was one of the first female members of the Nigerian Parliament and fought for the rights of women and the underprivileged in society.

Sani Abacha

Sani Abacha, although a controversial figure, was instrumental in the economic and infrastructural development of Nigeria during his military rule. His policies significantly impacted Nigeria’s political landscape.

Ahmadu bello

Ahmadu Bello was the first Premier of Northern Nigeria and was instrumental in the social,educational,and political advancement of Northern Nigeria. He advocated for modernization and development in the northern region.

Wole soyinka

Wole Soyinka is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated playwrights and poets. He won the Nobel prize in Literature in 1986 and used his platform to speak out against oppression and dictatorship in Nigeria.

Fela Kuti

Fela Kuti was a revolutionary musician who used Afrobeat to express political and social issues in Nigeria.His music and activism against corruption and human rights abuses made him a cultural icon.

Pupils’ Activity: pupils will respond to questions and share what they know about the heroes shown.

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher will explain the contributions of various Nigerian heroes,using visual aids like flashcards and posters.Pupils’ Activity: Pupils will listen attentively and ask questions.

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher will divide pupils into groups to discuss one hero or heroine each,then present their findings.
