Definition of Timber Defects
Timber defects are imperfections or irregularities that occur in wood, which can reduce its strength, durability, appearance, and usefulness. These defects can be natural or caused by external factors.
Knots in Timber
Knots are portions of branches that are embedded in the timber during its growth. They are a common defect that can affect the strength and appearance of wood.
The following are types of knots:
- Live/Sound Knots: These are firmly united with the surrounding wood and typically do not affect strength significantly.
- Dead/Loose Knots: These are not firmly united with the wood and may fall out, leaving a hole. They significantly weaken the timber.
- Pin Knots: Very small knots, usually less than 6mm in diameter.
- Knot Holes: Holes left in the timber where dead knots have fallen out.
Warping
Warping refers to the distortion or bending of timber from its original flat shape, usually caused by uneven drying or moisture changes.
The following are common forms of warping:
- Cupping: The timber bends across its width, forming a concave or convex shape.
- Bowing: The timber bends along its length, like a bow.
- Twisting: The timber distorts along its length, with the ends twisting in opposite directions.
- Spring: The timber develops a curve along one edge.
Causes of warping include uneven seasoning, rapid drying, and improper storage.
Cracks and Splits
Cracks and splits are separations of wood fibres that occur in timber, often due to stresses from drying or growth.
The following are types of cracks and splits:
- Checks: Small, superficial cracks that appear on the surface of timber, usually along the grain, due to rapid drying.
- Splits: Larger and deeper separations of wood fibres that extend from one face to another, typically at the ends of timber.
- Shakes: Separations of wood fibres that run between the annual growth rings. They can be ring shakes (along the ring) or heart shakes (through the heartwood).
Insect Damage
Insect damage refers to the deterioration of timber caused by various insects feeding on or boring into the wood.
The following are common types of insect damage and their signs:
- Termite Damage: Characterized by tunnels (galleries) within the wood, often filled with mud, and a hollow sound when tapped.
- Woodworm (Powderpost Beetle) Damage: Identified by small, round exit holes on the timber surface and fine powdery dust (frass) around the holes.
- Carpenter Ant Damage: Similar to termites but they do not eat wood; they excavate galleries to build nests, leaving behind wood shavings.
