Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes two short sentences on the board, one with a clear joiner (e.g., “ma/ mgbe”), and one short direct statement in quotation form. The teacher asks pupils to point out the joining word and the quoted speech.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify the joining word, attempt to split the sentence into parts, and read the quoted statement aloud.
Learning Point: Sentences can have parts (nkebiahịrị) and speech can be written in different forms.

Step 2: Teaching Nkebiahịrị (Meaning and Identification)

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines nkebiahịrị and explains how it appears through joiners and punctuation, giving simple examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the definition and underline joiners in given examples.
Learning Point: Nkebiahịrị is a part of a sentence that helps to organize meaning.

Step 3: Nkewaputa Nkebiahịrị (Guided Practice)

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher demonstrates how to split a sentence into nkebiahịrị, then guides pupils to split two more sentences on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils split sentences into parts and read each part clearly.
Learning Point: Correct splitting of nkebiahịrị makes writing clearer.

Step 4: Omenala (Udi Echichi/Echimechi Odinala)

Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains echichi/echimechi odinala and lists common types, allowing pupils to mention examples from their communities respectfully.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils mention types they know and state one feature of any type discussed.
Learning Point: Echimechi odinala includes different cultural practices that guide community life.

Step 5: Agụmagụ (Nkwusara)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines nkwusara and shows how it is written using quotation marks and reporting verbs in simple Igbo examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils write one example of nkwusara from the board and read it aloud.
Learning Point: Nkwusara presents speech exactly as spoken.

Step 6: Agụmagụ (Ekwueche Ozo and Conversion)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines ekwueche ozo and demonstrates how to change a short nkwusara into ekwueche ozo using basic rules (person and time changes).
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils convert one short direct statement to ekwueche ozo in pairs and compare answers.
Learning Point: Ekwueche ozo reports speech without quoting the exact words.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Define nkebiahịrị and state one way it appears in a sentence.
  2. Separate the nkebiahịrị in this sentence: “anyị gara ahịa, ma anyị laghachiri ngwa ngwa.”
  3. State two types of echimechi odinala and mention one feature of each.
  4. Explain the difference between nkwusara and ekwueche ozo.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summary/Closure
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes key points and gives a short exercise: write two sentences containing nkebiahịrị and split them; write one example each of nkwusara and ekwueche ozo on the same message.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils submit their sentences and corrections are made where necessary.
Learning Point: Pupils improve sentence structure, cultural understanding, and correct speech presentation in writing.

Lesson Keywords

  • Nkebiahịrị – akụkụ ahịrịokwu a pụrụ ịmata ma kewaa n’ime ahịrịokwu.
  • Nkewaputa – ịkewaa ahịrịokwu n’akụkụ ya ka echiche doo anya.

Differentiation

Pupils who need support will work with shorter sentences and simple speech statements, while faster learners will split longer sentences with multiple joiners and convert more than one nkwusara into ekwueche ozo with correct person and time changes.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Use simple and familiar examples when introducing nkebiahịrị and speech forms, then increase difficulty gradually. Handle cultural topics with respect, allowing pupils to share local examples without presenting any practice as a basis for mockery or conflict.
