Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes two sentences on the board and asks pupils to identify the parts of each sentence and any comparison used in the second sentence.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils read the sentences and attempt to point out parts of the sentences and the comparison word used.
Learning Point: Sentences have parts (nkebiahịrị) and comparisons can be expressed in different ways.

Step 2: Meaning of Nkebiahịrị and Types

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains nkebiahịrị and presents types (isi, enyemaka, jikọtara) using a chart and short examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes and classify given examples into types.
Learning Point: Nkebiahịrị can be main, subordinate, or coordinated depending on how it functions.

Step 3: Nkebiahịrị Keaha (Meaning and Functions)

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines nkebiahịrị keaha, shows where it appears in a sentence, and underlines it in sample sentences.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify nkebiahịrị keaha in provided sentences and state its function (subject/object/complement).
Learning Point: Nkebiahịrị keaha functions like a noun in a sentence.

Step 4: Guided Practice on Nkebiahịrị Keaha

Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gives two sentence patterns and guides pupils to create their own sentences containing nkebiahịrị keaha.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils write and read out their sentences, then correct errors with guidance.
Learning Point: Correct construction and identification of nkebiahịrị keaha improves grammar and comprehension.

Step 5: Omenala (Echimechi Lọlọ: Meaning, Roles, Benefits)

Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains echimechi Lọlọ, lists roles and benefits, and guides pupils to give acceptable community examples respectfully.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils state roles and benefits and share examples they know.
Learning Point: Echimechi Lọlọ supports cultural leadership and community order.

Step 6: Agụmagụ (Myiri and Mburụ)

Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines myiri and mburụ, highlights differences, and gives examples for pupils to classify.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils classify examples into myiri or mburụ and write one example each.
Learning Point: Myiri uses clear comparison words, while mburụ uses implied comparison.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Define nkebiahịrị and list two types of nkebiahịrị.
  2. Define nkebiahịrị keaha and identify it in one given sentence.
  3. State two roles of Lọlọ and mention two benefits of echimechi Lọlọ.
  4. Define myiri and mburụ and state one difference between them.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summary/Closure
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the lesson and gives a short assignment: write three sentences containing nkebiahịrị keaha, and provide two examples each of myiri and mburụ.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils submit their work and corrections are made where necessary.
Learning Point: Pupils apply grammar and figurative language correctly and relate cultural knowledge to community life.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Use clear Igbo examples familiar to pupils when teaching nkebiahịrị keaha, then increase difficulty gradually. When teaching echimechi Lọlọ, focus on respectful cultural understanding and avoid arguments about community differences, guiding pupils to present examples responsibly.
