  • The Constitution
  • The Executive Arm of Government
  • The Legislative Arm of Government
  • The Judiciary Arm of Government
  • The Armed Forces
  • Civil Societies

The Constitution

The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, providing the framework for governance and guaranteeing citizens’ rights. It is the fundamental law from which all other laws derive their authority.

Its importance includes:

  • It establishes the structure and powers of government.
  • It defines the powers and limitations of government organs.
  • It protects fundamental human rights and freedoms.
  • It ensures the rule of law and stability in the nation.

This arm is responsible for implementing and enforcing laws. It is headed by the President at the federal level and Governors at the state level.

Its roles include:

  • Formulating and implementing government policies and programmes.
  • Maintaining law and order within the country.
  • Representing the nation internationally.
  • Appointing key government officials.

The Legislative Arm of Government

This arm is responsible for making laws. In Nigeria, it is the National Assembly (comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives) at the federal level, and State Houses of Assembly at the state level.

Its functions include:

  • Making new laws and amending existing ones.
  • Approving the national budget.
  • Exercising oversight functions over the executive arm.

  • Maintaining internal security when called upon by civil authorities.
  • Protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
  • Supporting national development initiatives.

Civil Societies

These are non-governmental, non-profit organizations that represent the interests of citizens and advocate for various causes. They include NGOs, community-based organizations, professional bodies, and religious groups.
