Lesson Content/Board Summary

DEMOCRACY

Meaning of Democracy

Democracy is a system of government where supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation, usually involving periodically held free elections.

Representative Democracy

Representative democracy is a system of government in which citizens elect officials to represent their interests and make decisions on their behalf. This is common in large populations where direct participation by all citizens in daily governance is not practical.

Characteristics of Democracy

The following are key characteristics of democracy:

  • Rule of Law: Everyone, including those in authority, is subject to and accountable under the law.
  • Popular Sovereignty: The authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives.
  • Free and Fair Elections: Citizens have the right to choose their representatives through regular, competitive, and transparent elections.
  • Protection of Human Rights: Fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals are guaranteed and protected by the constitution.
  • Multi-party System: There is a presence of more than one political party, allowing citizens various choices.
  • Independent Judiciary: The courts are free from political interference and can interpret laws fairly.
  • Freedom of Speech and Press: Citizens and the media can express their views without fear of censorship or punishment.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, take notes, and contribute to the definition based on their understanding.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the definition and origin of democracy.

Step 3: Representative Democracy

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Elucidation/Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains representative democracy, discussing why it is necessary, especially in countries with large populations like Nigeria. The teacher asks pupils to name their elected representatives (e.g., President, Governor, Senator).

Learning Point: Pupils understand representative democracy and its practical application.

Step 4: Characteristics of Democracy

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Listing/Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher lists and explains the characteristics of democracy, such as the rule of law, free and fair elections, protection of human rights, multi-party system, and independent judiciary. The teacher uses examples from Nigeria.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, take notes, and ask questions for clarification.
Learning Point: Pupils identify and understand the key features of a democratic system.

Step 5: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
