Candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education will pay N4,000 only once to verify their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) O’Level results through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The clarification was issued jointly by JAMB and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) following the introduction of a new technology-driven system for the remote verification of candidates’ O’Level results.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are processed through JAMB will verify their WASSCE results once through the board’s designated Verification Service platform.
Once the verification is completed, the outcome will be transmitted to the relevant tertiary institution for admission screening and other legitimate administrative purposes.
Candidates Will Not Pay Institutions Again
JAMB and WAEC stressed that candidates who have successfully completed the verification process through the approved platform should not be required to pay another verification fee to their preferred institutions.
The two examination and admission bodies explained that the N4,000 payment is a one-off charge, meaning candidates do not need to pay the fee separately for every institution to which they apply.
Tertiary institutions are expected to rely on the verified results transmitted by JAMB when processing candidates for admission.
This is expected to prevent candidates from being subjected to multiple paid verification exercises for the same WASSCE result.
New System Allows Remote Verification
The development follows JAMB’s introduction of a system that allows candidates to upload and verify their O’Level results remotely without necessarily visiting a JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre solely for the verification process.
The service initially commenced with WAEC results and allows JAMB to authenticate candidates’ academic records directly with WAEC.
After verification, the result can be shared with the appropriate tertiary institution for admission-related purposes.
The new process is designed to make the admission system more convenient for candidates while reducing the cost and stress associated with repeated physical verification exercises.
WAEC Authorises JAMB to Share Verification Results
WAEC has also authorised JAMB to transmit the outcome of candidates’ WASSCE verification to the relevant tertiary institutions.
This means candidates who have successfully verified their results through JAMB will not be expected to repeat the same verification process with individual institutions.
JAMB and WAEC said the arrangement was developed to reduce duplication, simplify admission procedures and protect the integrity of candidates’ academic records.
New Policy Could Reduce Admission Costs
The one-time verification fee is expected to reduce the financial burden on admission seekers, particularly candidates applying to multiple institutions.
Previously, candidates could encounter different document screening and verification requirements during the admission process, potentially resulting in additional costs and repeated checks of the same academic credentials.
The centralised verification system is intended to address some of these challenges by allowing one verified result to be used for relevant admission purposes.
The system may also reduce unnecessary movement between tertiary institutions, JAMB offices and CBT centres during the admission process.
Move to Tackle Fake O’Level Results
Beyond reducing costs and simplifying admission procedures, JAMB and WAEC said the collaboration would help strengthen the authentication of candidates’ academic records.
The direct verification process is expected to make it more difficult for candidates to use fake or altered O’Level certificates during the tertiary admission process.
By allowing JAMB to authenticate WASSCE results directly with WAEC, institutions can receive verified academic information rather than relying solely on documents submitted by candidates.
Candidates Advised to Complete Verification Through JAMB
Candidates have been advised to complete their WASSCE O’Level result verification through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform and keep their verification details for use during the admission process.
Candidates who have already successfully verified their WASSCE results through the approved platform will not be required to repeat the same exercise.
The latest clarification effectively means that the system operates on a “one verification, multiple uses” basis.
For admission seekers, this means the N4,000 verification payment is made once, while the verified WASSCE result can subsequently be used by the relevant institution for admission screening and related administrative purposes.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by JAMB and WAEC to make Nigeria’s tertiary admission process more efficient, affordable and secure.
