What are National Symbols?

Nigeria’s National Symbols

Our main national symbols include:

3. The National Anthem
4. The National Pledge

The National Flag

The Nigerian National Flag has two colours: green and white.

1. Appearance: It has two green stripes on the sides and one white stripe in the middle.
2. Meaning: The green colour stands for Nigeria’s rich agriculture and natural wealth. The white colour stands for peace and unity.
3. Proper Behaviour: We must stand at attention when the flag is being raised or lowered. We should never let the flag touch the ground or treat it carelessly.

The National Coat of Arms

The National Coat of Arms is another important symbol of Nigeria.

1. Appearance: It has a black shield with two white horses, an eagle, and green and white bands. Below it is a ribbon with the motto “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress”.
2. Meaning: The black shield represents Nigeria’s fertile soil. The two white horses represent dignity. The eagle represents strength. The green and white bands represent the Niger and Benue Rivers. The flowers represent the beauty of Nigeria.
3. Proper Behaviour: We should treat the Coat of Arms with respect and never deface it.

The National Anthem

The National Anthem is a special song we sing to honour Nigeria.

1. Meaning: It talks about our love for Nigeria, our hard work, and our prayers for peace and progress.
2. Proper Behaviour: When the National Anthem is being played or sung, we must stand at attention and sing along with pride.

The National Pledge

The National Pledge is a promise we make to be loyal and faithful to Nigeria.

1. Meaning: It is a promise to serve Nigeria with all our strength and defend her unity.
2. Proper Behaviour: When reciting the National Pledge, we stand at attention, and we can place our right hand on our chest.

Showing Respect for National Symbols

Showing respect for our national symbols means:
