Meaning of National Symbols

National symbols are recognised signs, objects, words or songs that represent a country and help citizens express belonging and unity.

Examples in Nigeria

National flag: green, white and green vertical bands.
Coat of arms: a black shield with a wavy white Y-shape, two horses, an eagle and Nigeria’s motto.
National anthem: Nigeria, We Hail Thee, Nigeria’s official anthem since the National Anthem Act 2024.
National pledge, currency and constitution: other important expressions or institutions of national identity.

Citizens respect national symbols by using them correctly, standing respectfully when required and living by values such as truth, justice, peace and unity. A symbol should not be worshipped or used to look down on another country.
