Pupils have basic knowledge of the human body and some functions of body organs from their Junior Secondary School Health Education lessons.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

HUMAN REPRODUCTION

Definition of Reproduction

Reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organisms – “offspring” – are produced from their “parents”. It is a fundamental feature of all known life.

Key Terms in Reproduction

The following terms are important in understanding human reproduction:

  • Sex Gamete: These are the reproductive cells. The male gamete is the sperm, and the female gamete is the ovum (egg cell).
  • Ovulation: This is the release of a mature egg from the ovary, typically occurring once in a menstrual cycle.
  • Menstruation: This is the monthly shedding of the uterine lining in females, accompanied by bleeding, if pregnancy does not occur.
  • Pregnancy: This is the period during which a fetus develops inside a woman’s womb.
  • Gestation: This refers to the period of development of an embryo or fetus inside the mother’s body, from conception to birth. In humans, it typically lasts about nine months.

Male Reproductive Organs

The male reproductive system is responsible for producing and transporting sperm. The main organs include:

  • Testes: These are the primary male reproductive organs located in the scrotum, responsible for producing sperm and male hormones (testosterone).
  • Epididymis: A coiled tube located on the back of each testis, where sperm mature and are stored.
  • Vas Deferens: A tube that carries sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
  • Seminal Vesicles: Glands that produce a fluid that nourishes and activates sperm.
  • Prostate Gland: A gland that secretes a milky fluid into the semen, helping to activate sperm.
  • Urethra: A tube that carries both urine and semen out of the body through the penis.
  • Penis: The external male organ used for urination and sexual intercourse.

Female Reproductive Organs

The female reproductive system is responsible for producing eggs, enabling fertilization, and supporting the development of a fetus. The main organs include:

  • Ovaries: These are the primary female reproductive organs, located in the pelvic cavity, responsible for producing eggs (ova) and female hormones (estrogen and progesterone).
  • Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts): Tubes that extend from the uterus to the ovaries, providing a pathway for the egg to travel to the uterus. Fertilization usually occurs here.
  • Uterus (Womb): A hollow, muscular organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus.
  • Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
  • Vagina: A muscular canal connecting the uterus to the outside of the body, serving as the birth canal and for sexual intercourse.
  • Vulva: The external female genitalia, including the labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening.

Process of Fertilization

Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote. The process involves the following:

  • During sexual intercourse, sperm are released into the vagina.
  • Sperm travel through the cervix and uterus into the fallopian tubes.
  • If an egg has been released from the ovary (ovulation) and is present in the fallopian tube, a single sperm can penetrate and fertilize it.
  • The genetic material from the sperm and egg combine to form a zygote.
  • The zygote then travels to the uterus, where it implants in the uterine lining and begins to develop.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
