Rationale for the Lesson

Definition of Career

A career is the general course or progression of one’s working life, especially in a particular profession or field. It is the work a person does over a period of time.

Types of Careers

There are many different types of careers that people engage in, including:

Carpentry (working with wood)
Welding (joining metals together)
Engineering (designing and building structures or systems)
Teaching (educating and guiding students)
Hair plaiting (styling hair)
Tailoring (making and altering clothes)
Farming (growing crops and raising animals)
Shepherding (caring for sheep or other livestock)

Lessons from the Bible about Work and Calling

The Bible provides examples and teachings about the importance and dignity of work, and how God relates to our occupations.

Matthew 13:54–58 (Jesus in Nazareth):
- Jesus was known as the “carpenter’s son,” showing that physical labour is honourable.
- People in His hometown struggled to accept His divine calling because they only saw His humble background. This teaches us not to despise humble beginnings or judge people based on their family’s occupation.
- God can use anyone, regardless of their background, for His purpose.
Genesis 4:1–6 (Cain and Abel):
- Cain was a farmer, and Abel was a shepherd, illustrating different types of work people can do.
- Both offered sacrifices from the fruit of their labour to God.
- God accepted Abel’s offering but not Cain’s. This teaches us that God looks at the heart and sincerity behind our work and offerings, not just the work itself. Our attitude towards work and God matters.

Choosing a Suitable Occupation

When choosing an occupation, it is important to consider several factors:

Interests: What do you enjoy doing? What subjects do you like in school?
Skills and Talents: What are you good at? What comes easily to you?
Needs of the Community: What services or goods are needed in your area?
Advice: Seek guidance from your parents, teachers, and other trusted adults.
Prayer: Pray for God’s guidance in making your choice.
Dignity of Labour: Remember that all honest work has dignity and value.
