- A short video clip showing wildlife in forest areas
- Whiteboard and markers
Rationale for the Lesson
This lesson enables pupils to understand various forest types and resources, and to appreciate the economic, environmental, and social importance of forests in Nigeria.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils have seen trees, bushes, and wildlife around their homes and have learned about natural vegetation and uses of plants in earlier lessons.
Lesson Content/Board Summary
Forests
A forest is a large area of land covered mainly with trees, shrubs, and other vegetation. Forests provide valuable resources and are classified based on the type and density of trees found in them.
Types of Forests
Forests can be grouped according to the nature of their vegetation, rainfall pattern, and location.
The following are the main types of forests in Nigeria:
- Mangrove (Swampy) Forest: Found in coastal areas with salty water. The soil is waterlogged and muddy. Trees have stilt roots to support them, and examples include mangrove trees and palms.
- Rain Forest: Found in areas with heavy rainfall and thick vegetation. Many tall trees grow closely together, forming a canopy. Common trees include iroko, mahogany, and obeche.
- Derived Forest: Found in areas where the original rainforest has been cleared for farming. It contains fewer trees and more grasses and shrubs.
Forest Resources
Forests provide numerous natural resources that are useful to humans, animals, and the environment.
The following are some major forest resources:
- Trees: Used for timber, furniture, paper, and building materials.
- Wildlife: Includes animals such as monkeys, antelopes, and birds which serve as food and are used for research.
- Fruits: Forests provide fruits like bush mango, pear, and guava which are sources of food and vitamins.
- Herbs: Many medicinal plants and herbs are obtained from forests for treating illnesses.
- Shelter: Trees and bushes provide protection and shade for animals and people.
Importance of Forests
Forests are essential for human survival, economic development, and environmental balance.
The following are some importance of forests:
- They provide wood, food, and medicine.
- They serve as habitats for wildlife.
- They prevent soil erosion and maintain soil fertility.
- They help in controlling climate and purifying the air.
- They generate income through tourism and trade in forest products.
Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques:
Discussion, Lecture, Explanation, Demonstration, Group Work, Question and Answer, Field Observation
Instructional Procedures
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher begins the lesson by asking pupils about trees, fruits, or wild animals they have seen around their homes or on trips. Relates responses to the topic “Forests.”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond and share experiences about trees or animals seen in forested areas.
Learning Point: Pupils recall their prior knowledge about vegetation and are introduced to forests.
Step 2: Types of Forests
Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the three major types of forests using charts and pictures showing mangrove, rainforest, and derived forest areas.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the charts and describe visible differences among the forest types.
Learning Point: Pupils identify the different types of forests and their features.
Step 3: Forest Resources
Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher lists forest resources and shows samples or pictures of wood, fruits, herbs, and wildlife.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils discuss and identify resources they have seen or used before.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the various materials that forests provide.
Step 4: Importance of Forests
Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation and Interaction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the importance of forests to people, animals, and the environment, giving examples of economic and health benefits.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils participate by stating how forest resources benefit their families and community.
Learning Point: Pupils appreciate the need to conserve forests for sustainable use.
Step 5: Note-Taking
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes the summarized lesson notes (board summary) for pupils to copy.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy notes into their exercise books.
Learning Point: Pupils record important facts from the lesson.
Step 6: Evaluation/Review
Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- Mention three main types of forests found in Nigeria.
- List four resources that can be obtained from forests.
- State three importance of forests to man and the environment.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer questions orally.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the key points in the lesson.
Step 7: Conclusion
Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the lesson, emphasizing the need for forest conservation and protection.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen attentively and ask questions for clarification.
Learning Point: Pupils commit to protecting forests and using forest resources wisely.
Lesson Keywords
- Forest – large area covered with trees and plants
- Mangrove – swampy forest found in coastal areas
- Rainforest – dense forest with tall trees and heavy rainfall
- Derived Forest – forest with few trees and more grasses due to clearing
- Wildlife – animals living naturally in forests
Differentiation
Provide pictorial aids for slow learners to support understanding, and allow fast learners to lead group discussions and describe forest types in detail.
Note for teachers using this lesson plan
Encourage pupils to share local examples of forest areas. If possible, organize a field trip or show a short documentary on forests. Emphasize environmental protection.
