Al-Hadith

Modesty in Dressing

Modesty (Hayā’) in dressing is a fundamental aspect of Islamic teachings, promoting dignity, respect, and protection from inappropriate attention. It applies to both male and female Muslims.

Requirements for Modest Dressing:

  1. For Males:
    • Covering the area from the navel to the knee.
    • Wearing loose-fitting clothes that do not reveal body shape.
    • Avoiding silk garments and gold ornaments (which are specific prohibitions for men in Islam).
  2. For Females:
    • Covering the entire body except for the face and hands (as per the majority opinion).
    • Wearing loose-fitting, non-transparent clothes that do not reveal body shape.
    • Avoiding excessive adornment or clothing that attracts undue attention.
    • Wearing a head covering (hijab).

Modesty in Behaviour

Modesty extends beyond dressing to encompass one’s overall behaviour, speech, and interactions. It means acting with humility, respect, and avoiding arrogance or ostentation.

Examples of Modest Behaviour:

  1. Lowering the gaze when interacting with the opposite gender.
  2. Speaking gently and avoiding loud, boisterous, or vulgar language.
  3. Walking with humility and not with arrogance.
  4. Avoiding excessive laughter or frivolous talk in public.
  5. Being respectful towards elders and compassionate towards the young.

Perseverance (Sabr)

Perseverance, or Sabr, is the act of patiently enduring difficulties, hardships, and challenges while remaining steadfast in one’s faith and commitment to Allah. It involves exercising self-control and maintaining hope during adversity.

Examples of Perseverance:

  1. Remaining patient during illness or loss of a loved one.
  2. Continuing to perform acts of worship (Salat, fasting) even when tired or busy.
  3. Striving for a goal despite repeated failures or setbacks.
  4. Resisting temptations and refraining from sins.
  5. Enduring injustice or oppression with dignity and seeking Allah’s help.

Allah’s Consciousness (Taqwa)

Allah’s consciousness, known as Taqwa, refers to being constantly aware of Allah’s presence, fearing His displeasure, and striving to obey His commands while avoiding His prohibitions. It is a state of mindfulness that guides all thoughts, words, and deeds.

Practical Examples of Allah’s Consciousness:

  1. Trustfulness (Amanah): Being honest and reliable in all dealings, fulfilling promises, and safeguarding trusts.
  2. Piety (Ihsan): Worshipping Allah as if one sees Him, and knowing that even if one does not see Him, He sees them. Striving for excellence in all actions.
  3. Good Deeds (Hasanaat): Consistently performing acts of kindness, charity, and righteousness.
  4. Cleanliness (Taharah): Maintaining physical and spiritual purity, including personal hygiene and avoiding impurities.
  5. Avoidance of Sins (Ijtinab al-Ma’asi): Consciously staying away from all actions, words, and thoughts that displease Allah.
