Functions of the legislative Arm Of Government
The legislative arm of government, also known as the law-making body, is responsible for creating laws that govern a country. In Nigeria, the National Assembly performs this role at the federal level.
Below are functions of the legislative arm of government:
- Lawmaking: This involves creating, amending, and repealing laws for the country.
- Representation: Legislators represent the interests of their constituencies in government.
- Oversight: The legislative arm checks the activities of the executive to prevent abuse of power.
- Approval of Budget: Legislators review and approve the government’s annual budget.
- Constitution Amendment: They propose and vote on changes to the country’s constitution.
- Impeachment: The legislature has the power to impeach public officials, including the president, for misconduct.
