Resources and Decision Making

Meaning of Family Resources

Family resources are the things that individuals and families use to meet their needs and achieve their goals. These resources help families to live comfortably and manage daily life effectively.

The following are types of family resources:

  1. Human Resources: These are the skills, knowledge, time, energy, and abilities of family members.
  2. Material Resources: These include physical items such as money, food, clothes, land, buildings, furniture, and tools.
  3. Natural Resources: These are resources provided by nature like water, air, sunlight, and soil.
  4. Community Resources: Facilities or services available in the community such as schools, hospitals, markets, and libraries.
Meaning of Decision Making

Decision making is the process of choosing the best option from different possible choices in order to solve a problem or achieve a goal. Every family and individual makes decisions daily on how to use available resources.

Steps in Decision Making

The following are steps involved in decision making:

  1. Identify the problem: Know what decision needs to be made.
  2. Gather information: Collect all necessary facts and details.
  3. Consider alternatives: Think about different options or choices.
  4. Evaluate the alternatives: Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option.
  5. Make a choice: Choose the best alternative.
  6. Take action: Put the chosen decision into practice.
  7. Evaluate the result: Check if the decision gave a good result; if not, try another option.
Simple Decision Making

Simple decision making involves making quick and easy choices that do not require long thinking or planning. These are often daily decisions that can be changed easily.

Examples include:

  1. Deciding what to wear to school.
  2. Choosing what food to eat.
  3. Deciding when to do homework.
Personal Decision Making

Personal decision making involves choosing actions or plans that affect an individual directly. It requires thinking carefully about one’s goals, values, and possible outcomes before deciding.
