1. Housing and Equipment

- Deep litter system: Birds are kept on a floor covered with absorbent material like wood shavings or rice hulls.
- Battery cage system: Birds are housed individually or in small groups in wire cages stacked in rows.
- Semi-intensive system: Birds have access to both an indoor shelter and an outdoor run.

2. Brooding and Incubation
Brooding is the provision of artificial heat and care to young chicks from day-old until they can regulate their own body temperature (usually 3-4 weeks). It ensures their survival and proper development.
Incubation is the process of providing suitable conditions (temperature, humidity, ventilation, turning) for eggs to develop and hatch into chicks. This can be natural (by a broody hen) or artificial (using an incubator).
3. Feeding Chicks, Layers, and Broilers
Different types of poultry have specific nutritional needs based on their age and purpose.
- Chicks (Starter Mash): Require high protein and energy for rapid growth in the first few weeks.
- Growers (Grower Mash): Have moderate protein and energy levels to support continued growth without excessive fat deposition.
- Layers (Layer Mash): Require high calcium and balanced protein for egg production and strong eggshells.
- Broilers (Finisher Mash): Need very high protein and energy to achieve maximum weight gain in a short period.
4. Common Poultry Diseases and Control
Diseases can cause significant losses in poultry farming. Prevention and prompt treatment are important.

- Newcastle Disease: Viral disease affecting respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems.
- Gumboro Disease (Infectious Bursal Disease): Viral disease affecting the immune system of young chicks.

- Coccidiosis: Parasitic disease affecting the intestines, causing bloody droppings.
- Marek’s Disease: Viral disease causing tumours and paralysis.

5. Vaccination
Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to stimulate a bird’s immune system to produce antibodies, thereby protecting it from specific diseases. It is a key preventive measure.

6. Debeaking
Debeaking is the partial removal of the upper and/or lower beak of poultry, usually done when chicks are young. It is a management practice to prevent undesirable behaviours.

- To prevent cannibalism (birds pecking at each other).
- To prevent feather pecking.
- To reduce feed wastage.
- To prevent egg eating.
7. Culling
Culling is the process of identifying and removing unproductive, diseased, or undesirable birds from the flock. It helps maintain flock health and productivity.
The following are reasons for culling:
- Poor egg production (for layers).
- Disease or injury.
- Old age.
- Aggressiveness or undesirable traits.
- Poor growth rate (for broilers).
