Digestion is the process by which large, complex food molecules are broken down into smaller, simpler molecules that can be absorbed and utilized by the body. This process occurs in the digestive system, also known as the alimentary canal.

Digestive System of Ruminants

Ruminants are animals with a multi-compartmented stomach, typically four chambers. Examples include cattle, sheep, and goats.

The main parts of the ruminant digestive system and their functions are:

  • Mouth: For prehension (grasping food), mastication (chewing), and mixing food with saliva.
  • Oesophagus: A muscular tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach compartments.
  • Rumen: The largest compartment; acts as a fermentation vat where microbes break down cellulose. This is where cud is formed for regurgitation.
  • Reticulum: Collects smaller digesta particles and acts as a filter. It also helps in regurgitation of cud.
  • Omasum: Absorbs water and some volatile fatty acids, and grinds food particles.
  • Abomasum: The “true stomach” where glandular digestion (like in non-ruminants) occurs with the secretion of digestive enzymes.
  • Small Intestine: Site for final digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  • Large Intestine: Absorbs water and forms faeces.
  • Anus: For the expulsion of faeces.

Digestive System of Non-Ruminants

Non-ruminants (monogastric animals) have a single-chambered stomach. Examples include pigs, poultry, and rabbits.

The main parts of the non-ruminant digestive system and their functions are:

  • Mouth: For prehension, mastication (chewing), and mixing food with saliva containing enzymes (e.g., amylase in some species).
  • Oesophagus: Transports food from the mouth to the stomach.
  • Stomach: Secretes gastric juices (hydrochloric acid and enzymes like pepsin) to break down proteins.
  • Small Intestine: The primary site for chemical digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
  • Large Intestine: Absorbs water, electrolytes, and forms faeces. Limited fermentation may occur here in some non-ruminants.
  • Anus: For the expulsion of faeces. (In poultry, it’s the cloaca).
