Petrochemicals as Starting Materials for Organic Synthesis

Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum or natural gas. They serve as raw materials for a wide range of organic compounds and products.

Quality of Petrol and Octane Number

Petrol quality refers to its ability to burn smoothly and efficiently in an engine without causing knocking or pre-ignition.

Octane Number: This is a measure of a fuel’s resistance to knocking or pre-ignition during combustion in an internal combustion engine. A higher octane number indicates greater resistance to knocking and a better quality fuel.

  • Petrol with a higher octane number is suitable for high-compression engines.
  • Knocking reduces engine efficiency and can cause damage.

Natural Gas: Occurrence, LNG Packaging, and Uses

Occurrence: Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture found deep beneath the Earth’s surface, often associated with petroleum deposits. It is primarily composed of methane (CH₄).

LNG Packaging: Natural gas is packaged and transported as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This involves:

  • Cooling the natural gas to very low temperatures (around -162°C) to convert it into a liquid.
  • Reducing its volume significantly (about 1/600th of its gaseous volume), making it easier and more economical to store and transport in specialized cryogenic tankers and storage tanks.

Uses of Natural Gas:

  • Fuel for domestic cooking and heating.
  • Fuel for electricity generation in power plants.
  • Fuel for vehicles (as Compressed Natural Gas – CNG).
  • Raw material (feedstock) in the production of chemicals like ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.
  • Industrial fuel for various manufacturing processes.
