Meaning of Intervals

An interval in music is the distance between two notes. It is measured by the number of scale degrees between the two notes, including the starting and ending notes.

Meaning of Interval Inversion

Interval inversion is the process of reversing the order of the two notes that form an interval. When an interval is inverted, the lower note becomes the upper note, and the upper note becomes the lower note, moving it up or down an octave.

Rule for Interval Inversion

When an interval is inverted, its quality and number change. The sum of the original interval number and its inverted interval number will always be 9.

For example, a 2nd inverts to a 7th (2 + 7 = 9).

The qualities also change as follows:
