Meaning of Diatonic Intervals
A diatonic interval is the distance between two notes that belong to the same major or minor scale (key). These intervals are named based on the number of scale steps between the two notes, including the starting and ending notes.
Meaning of Melodic Intervals
A melodic interval occurs when two notes are played or sung one after the other. It refers to the musical distance between successive notes in a melody. Melodic intervals can move upwards or downwards.
Understanding Pitch
Pitch refers to how high or low a musical note sounds. It is determined by the frequency of the sound wave, with higher frequencies producing higher pitches and lower frequencies producing lower pitches.
Interval Counting on the Staff
To count intervals on the staff, count every line and space between the two notes, including the starting and ending notes.
- Line to Line: If starting on a line, the next line is a 3rd, the next line after that is a 5th, etc.
- Space to Space: If starting in a space, the next space is a 3rd, the next space after that is a 5th, etc.
- Line to Space: If starting on a line, the next space is a 2nd, the next space after that is a 4th, etc.
Inverted Intervals
An inverted interval is created by moving the lower note of an interval up an octave, or by moving the upper note down an octave. The sum of an interval and its inversion always equals nine (9).
Rules for Inverting Intervals:
- To find the numerical value of an inverted interval, subtract the original interval number from 9.
- Major intervals invert to minor intervals.
- Minor intervals invert to major intervals.
- Perfect intervals invert to perfect intervals.
- Augmented intervals invert to diminished intervals.
- Diminished intervals invert to augmented intervals.

- Unison (1st) ↔ Octave (8th) (9 – 1 = 8)
