Meaning of Digestive System

The digestive system is a group of organs working together to break down food into smaller molecules that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair.

Organs of the Digestive System and Their Functions

The digestive system consists of the alimentary canal (a long tube) and accessory organs. The main organs include:

  • Mouth: Where digestion begins; food is chewed (mechanical digestion) and mixed with saliva (chemical digestion starts with amylase).
  • Pharynx: A passageway for food and air.
  • Oesophagus: A muscular tube that pushes food from the pharynx to the stomach through peristalsis.
  • Stomach: A muscular bag that churns food (mechanical digestion) and mixes it with gastric juices containing hydrochloric acid and enzymes (chemical digestion of proteins).
  • Small Intestine: The primary site for chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients. It has three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
  • Large Intestine: Absorbs water and electrolytes from indigestible food matter and stores waste before elimination. It includes the colon, rectum, and anus.

Accessory organs include:

  • Salivary Glands: Produce saliva, which moistens food and contains enzymes (amylase) for carbohydrate digestion.
  • Liver: Produces bile, which aids in fat digestion and absorption, and processes absorbed nutrients.
  • Gallbladder: Stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver.
  • Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes (for carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and hormones (insulin, glucagon).

Types and Functions of Teeth

Humans have different types of teeth, each with a specific function in mechanical digestion:

  • Incisors: Flat, sharp teeth at the front of the mouth used for cutting and biting food.
  • Canines: Pointed teeth next to the incisors, used for tearing food.
  • Premolars: Located behind the canines, they have broad surfaces for crushing and grinding food.
  • Molars: The largest teeth, at the back of the mouth, with broad, flat surfaces for heavy grinding and chewing.

Diseases of the Digestive System

Common diseases affecting the digestive system include:

  • Ulcer: Sores that develop on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach, or small intestine, often caused by bacterial infection (H. pylori) or NSAID use.
  • Diarrhoea: Frequent passage of loose, watery stools, often caused by infections, food intolerance, or certain medications.
  • Constipation: Infrequent bowel movements or difficulty passing stools, often due to lack of fiber, fluids, or physical activity.
  • Food Poisoning: Illness caused by consuming food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
  • Appendicitis: Inflammation of the appendix, often requiring surgical removal.
  • Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver, often caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C).

Prevention of Digestive Diseases:

  • Practicing good hygiene (handwashing).
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fiber.
  • Drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoiding contaminated food and water.
  • Cooking food thoroughly.
  • Limiting processed foods and excessive alcohol.
  • Seeking medical attention for persistent symptoms.

Process of Digestion

Digestion involves both mechanical and chemical processes:

1. Mechanical Digestion: This involves the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces without changing its chemical composition. It includes:

  • Chewing (Mastication): In the mouth.
  • Churning: In the stomach, where muscular contractions mix food with digestive juices.
  • Peristalsis: Rhythmic contractions of muscles in the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines that move food along the alimentary canal.

2. Chemical Digestion: This involves the breakdown of complex food molecules into simpler, absorbable molecules through the action of enzymes. It occurs in:

  • Mouth: Salivary amylase begins carbohydrate digestion.
  • Stomach: Pepsin begins protein digestion.
  • Small Intestine: Most chemical digestion occurs here with enzymes from the pancreas and intestinal wall (e.g., amylase for carbohydrates, lipase for fats, trypsin for proteins).

After digestion, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream, and undigested waste is eliminated.
