Meaning of the Nervous System

The nervous system is divided into two main parts:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS): Consists of the brain and spinal cord.
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Consists of all the nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body, including muscles and organs.

Parts and their Functions:

  • Brain: The control center of the body. It processes information, controls thoughts, memory, emotions, speech, voluntary movements, and regulates many involuntary functions.
    • Cerebrum: Responsible for higher functions like thought, voluntary movement, language, and perception.
    • Cerebellum: Coordinates voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech.
    • Brainstem (Medulla Oblongata): Controls involuntary functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion.
  • Spinal Cord: A long, thin, tubular structure made of nervous tissue that extends from the brainstem down the back. It serves as the main pathway for information connecting the brain and peripheral nervous system. It also mediates reflex actions.
  • Nerves: Bundles of fibers that transmit electrical impulses between the CNS and the rest of the body.
    • Sensory Nerves: Carry signals from sensory organs (e.g., skin, eyes) to the CNS.
    • Motor Nerves: Carry signals from the CNS to muscles and glands, causing movement or secretion.
    • Mixed Nerves: Contain both sensory and motor fibers.

Process of Transmission of Nerve Impulse

A nerve impulse is an electrical signal that travels along a neuron. The process involves:

  • Stimulus: A change in the environment (e.g., touch, heat, light) that triggers a response.
  • Receptor: Specialized cells or organs that detect the stimulus.
  • Sensory Neuron: Transmits the impulse from the receptor to the CNS (spinal cord or brain).
  • Relay Neuron (Interneuron): Connects sensory and motor neurons within the CNS.
  • Motor Neuron: Transmits the impulse from the CNS to an effector (muscle or gland).
  • Effector: A muscle or gland that carries out the response.
  • Response: The action taken by the body in reaction to the stimulus.

Reflex Arc: The pathway followed by a nerve impulse during a reflex action (an involuntary, rapid response to a stimulus). It typically involves a receptor, sensory neuron, relay neuron, motor neuron, and effector.

Diseases of the Nervous System and Prevention

Diseases that affect the nervous system can impair sensation, movement, memory, and cognitive abilities.

Common nervous system diseases include:

  • Epilepsy: A disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
  • Stroke: Occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die.
  • Meningitis: Inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord, usually caused by infection.
