Meaning of Respiratory System

Structures and Functions of Respiratory Organs
The main organs of the respiratory system include:
- Nose/Nasal Cavity: Filters, warms, and moistens air before it enters the lungs. It also contains olfactory receptors for smell.
- Pharynx (Throat): A passageway for both air and food.
- Larynx (Voice Box): Contains vocal cords responsible for sound production. It also prevents food from entering the trachea.
- Trachea (Windpipe): A tube that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi. It is lined with cilia and mucus to trap foreign particles.
- Bronchi: Two main tubes that branch off the trachea, one leading to each lung. They further divide into smaller bronchioles.
- Bronchioles: Smaller tubes branching from the bronchi, leading to the alveoli.
- Alveoli (Air Sacs): Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) occurs between the air and the blood.
- Lungs: The primary organs of respiration, containing millions of alveoli. They facilitate the exchange of gases.
- Diaphragm: A large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. It contracts and relaxes to aid in breathing.
- Ribs and Intercostal Muscles: The ribs protect the lungs, and the intercostal muscles between them help expand and contract the chest cavity during breathing.
Process of Respiration
Respiration involves both the mechanical process of breathing and the biochemical process of gas exchange at different levels.
A. Mechanism of Breathing:
- Inspiration (Inhalation): The diaphragm contracts and moves downwards, while the external intercostal muscles contract, pulling the rib cage upwards and outwards. This increases the volume of the chest cavity, reducing air pressure inside, causing air to rush into the lungs.
- Expiration (Exhalation): The diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards, and the external intercostal muscles relax, allowing the rib cage to move downwards and inwards. This decreases the volume of the chest cavity, increasing air pressure inside, forcing air out of the lungs.
B. Types of Respiration:
- External Respiration: The exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the alveoli of the lungs and the blood in the capillaries. Oxygen moves from the lungs into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs.
- Internal (Tissue) Respiration: The exchange of gases between the blood in the capillaries and the body cells. Oxygen moves from the blood into the cells, and carbon dioxide moves from the cells into the blood.
- Cellular Respiration: The biochemical process within cells where glucose (food) is broken down in the presence of oxygen to release energy, carbon dioxide, and water. This energy is used for various cellular activities.
Diseases of the Respiratory System and Remedies
Many diseases can affect the respiratory system. Some common ones include:
- Asthma: A chronic condition causing inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
- Remedy: Inhalers (bronchodilators), avoiding triggers, allergy management.
