The Lagos State Government has announced that pupils seeking admission into public and private schools across the state will be required to have a valid Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) registration number beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.

Under the new directive, schools will be required to collect and record the LASRRA registration number of every learner as part of their admission and enrolment records. The requirement will take effect from Monday, September 14, 2026.

The directive was approved by the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, and is being implemented through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA).

Why Lagos Government Introduced the LASRRA Requirement

According to the state government, the policy is aimed at creating a comprehensive and verifiable database of learners across Lagos.

The government believes that having accurate information about pupils and students will support better planning and improve the delivery of educational services across the state.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education explained that linking learners to the LASRRA database would also strengthen record-keeping and make it easier for relevant government agencies to identify and verify learners.

The database is expected to support activities such as learner tracking, education planning, monitoring and evidence-based decision-making.

Schools to Record LASRRA Numbers in Admission Records

Under the new arrangement, public and private schools in Lagos have been directed to include each learner’s LASRRA registration number in their admission and school records.

Schools are also expected to sensitise parents and guardians about the new requirement and encourage families whose children have not yet been registered with LASRRA to complete the registration process before the new academic session gets underway.

The government has emphasised that the requirement applies to learners in both public and private schools across the state.

Data Protection and Confidentiality

While schools will be required to collect learners’ registration information, the Lagos State Government has directed them to ensure that personal data is handled securely and confidentially.

Schools are expected to comply with applicable data-protection requirements when collecting, storing and using learners’ information.

This is particularly important as schools increase their reliance on digital databases and electronic records for managing student information.

OEQA to Monitor Compliance

The Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, said OEQA would work with LASRRA and other relevant government agencies to establish the procedures for generating and assigning unique PINs to learners.

He added that sensitisation, registration and verification support would be made available to schools, parents, guardians and learners as the policy is implemented.

Compliance with the directive will also form part of OEQA’s monitoring and quality-assurance activities in public and private schools across Lagos.

Parents and Schools Urged to Prepare

The Lagos State Government has advised parents, guardians and school proprietors to ensure that their children and learners are registered with LASRRA before the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session.

The new requirement means parents preparing their children for admission or enrolment in Lagos schools should make LASRRA registration one of the items on their back-to-school checklist.

For schools, administrators will need to update their admission and record-keeping processes to accommodate the new registration requirement from September 14, 2026.

The policy is part of Lagos State’s wider effort to improve education planning through reliable learner data and strengthen the management of the state’s education system.
