A councillor in Imo State has supported hundreds of pupils and students in his community by donating thousands of educational materials aimed at improving learning conditions.
The councillor representing Owerre-Ebeiri Ward in the Orlu Local Government Area legislative council, Magnus Chibuike Okorie, distributed more than 3,000 school bags, textbooks and school uniforms to pupils and students in his constituency.
The donation was announced during his one-year scorecard and empowerment programme held in the ward over the weekend.
Speaking at the event, Okorie — who also serves as the Majority Leader of the Orlu Legislative Council and Vice Chairman of the South-East Councillors Forum of Nigeria — explained that the initiative was motivated by what he observed during visits to local schools.
According to him, many pupils were attending school without proper uniforms, while others were wearing torn or worn-out clothing.
He said school tailors were asked to measure pupils so that new uniforms could be produced for them, while the students were also provided with bags and textbooks to support their studies.
Okorie added that with financial support from Nzeribe Azukwu, President of the Old Owerre-Ebeiri Progressive Union in Diaspora, the programme also provided 35 JAMB registration forms for eligible students from the ward.
Some students from neighbouring wards in Orlu Local Government Area also benefited from the initiative.
The councillor said the effort was part of broader community support programmes designed to improve education and youth opportunities within the area.
He also highlighted other community projects carried out within the past year, including the grading of rural access roads in support of infrastructure development efforts under Hope Uzodinma.
Education stakeholders in the community have welcomed the donation, noting that access to learning materials and proper school uniforms can help improve pupil confidence, attendance and academic performance.
