- Penis: The external male organ used for urination and sexual intercourse. It contains erectile tissue that allows for erection.
- Scrotum: A sac of skin that holds the testes outside the body cavity, maintaining a temperature slightly lower than body temperature, which is optimal for sperm production.
Parts and Functions of the Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system is responsible for producing eggs, housing a developing fetus, and producing female hormones.
- Ovaries: The primary female reproductive organs located in the pelvic cavity. They produce eggs (ova) and female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
- Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts): Tubes that extend from the uterus to the ovaries. They transport eggs from the ovaries to the uterus and are the usual site of fertilization.
- Uterus (Womb): A hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus.
- Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It allows menstrual blood to exit and sperm to enter the uterus.
- Vagina: A muscular canal that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. It serves as the birth canal, receives the penis during intercourse, and is the exit route for menstrual blood.
- Vulva: The external female genitalia, including the labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening.
Structure of Male Sperm Cell
A sperm cell is a male gamete, a highly specialized cell designed for motility and fertilization. It consists of three main parts:
- Head: Contains the nucleus with the haploid set of chromosomes (genetic material). It is covered by an acrosome, which contains enzymes necessary to penetrate the egg.
- Midpiece: Contains numerous mitochondria, which provide the energy (ATP) required for the movement of the tail.
- Tail (Flagellum): A long, whip-like structure that propels the sperm forward, enabling it to swim towards the egg.
Structure of Female Egg Cell (Ovum)
An egg cell (ovum) is the female gamete, a large, non-motile cell containing the female’s genetic material and nutrients for early embryonic development. Its main components include:
- Nucleus: Contains the haploid set of chromosomes (genetic material) from the female.
- Cytoplasm: The jelly-like substance filling the cell, rich in nutrients (yolk) to support the early development of the embryo after fertilization.
- Zona Pellucida: A thick, transparent, extracellular layer that surrounds the plasma membrane of the egg. It plays a crucial role in sperm binding and preventing polyspermy (fertilization by multiple sperm).
- Corona Radiata: An outer layer of follicular cells that surrounds the zona pellucida. These cells provide nutrients to the egg and protect it.
