Arrangement of Floral Parts
A flower is the reproductive organ of flowering plants. It consists of several parts typically arranged in whorls on the receptacle.

- Corolla: The whorl inside the calyx, made up of petals, which are often brightly coloured to attract pollinators.
- Androecium: The male reproductive part, consisting of stamens. Each stamen has an anther (producing pollen) and a filament (supporting the anther).
- Gynoecium (Pistil/Carpel): The female reproductive part, consisting of one or more carpels. Each carpel has an ovary (containing ovules), a style (connecting stigma to ovary), and a stigma (receiving pollen).
Examples of flowers for practical observation: Pride of Barbados, Flame of the Forest, Hibiscus.
Placentation
Placentation refers to the arrangement of ovules within the ovary. The part of the ovary where ovules are attached is called the placenta.
- Marginal Placentation: Ovules are arranged along the fused margins of a single carpel, forming a ridge. (e.g., pea, bean).
- Parietal Placentation: Ovules develop on the inner wall of the ovary, which is typically one-chambered. (e.g., cucumber, pumpkin).
- Axile Placentation: Ovules are borne on the central axis of a multi-chambered ovary. The septa (partitions) meet at the centre. (e.g., hibiscus, tomato).
- Free Central Placentation: Ovules are borne on a central column in a one-chambered ovary, with no septa. (e.g., Dianthus).
- Basal Placentation: A single ovule is attached at the base of the ovary. (e.g., sunflower, maize).
- Apical Placentation: A single ovule is attached at the apex (top) of the ovary. (e.g., coriander).
Types of Ovary Conditions (Ovary Position)
The position of the ovary relative to other floral parts (sepals, petals, stamens) on the receptacle determines its type.
- Superior Ovary (Hypogynous Flower): The ovary is positioned above the attachment point of the sepals, petals, and stamens. The other floral parts are attached below the ovary. (e.g., Hibiscus, mustard, brinjal).
- Inferior Ovary (Epigynous Flower): The ovary is situated below the attachment point of the sepals, petals, and stamens. The other floral parts appear to arise from the top of the ovary. (e.g., guava, cucumber, sunflower).
- Half-Inferior Ovary (Perigynous Flower): The ovary is partially embedded in the receptacle, with the sepals, petals, and stamens attached around its middle level, often on a cup-shaped hypanthium. (e.g., rose, peach).
