Functions of the Producer

The producer is the person or company that manufactures goods or provides services. Producers start the distribution process by making products available.

The following are the functions of a producer:

  1. Produces or manufactures goods and services.
  2. Ensures quality control and standard of goods.
  3. Packages goods attractively for sale.
  4. Sells goods directly to wholesalers or retailers.
  5. Provides after-sales service and guarantees where necessary.
Functions of the Wholesaler

The wholesaler is a middleman who buys goods in large quantities from producers and sells them in smaller quantities to retailers.

The following are the functions of a wholesaler:

  1. Buys goods in bulk from producers.
  2. Breaks bulk into smaller quantities for retailers.
  3. Provides storage facilities for goods.
  4. Assists producers by promoting their products.
  5. Bears risks of price changes and unsold goods.
  6. Provides credit facilities to retailers.
Functions of the Retailer

The retailer is the final middleman who sells goods in small units to the consumer.

The following are the functions of a retailer:

  1. Buys goods from wholesalers or producers.
  2. Sells goods in small quantities to consumers.
  3. Displays goods attractively to encourage sales.
  4. Provides goods at convenient locations near consumers.
  5. Offers credit facilities to trusted customers.
  6. Provides feedback to wholesalers and producers about consumer preferences.
Functions of the Consumer

The consumer is the final user of goods and services. Consumers complete the distribution chain when they purchase and use products.

The following are the functions of a consumer:

  1. Buys goods and services to satisfy needs and wants.
  2. Provides feedback to retailers about product quality and prices.
  3. Creates demand for goods and services.
  4. Encourages producers to maintain quality through choices made.
