Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Before this lesson, prepare clear, colourful picture cards or real objects representing various first-term health habits like a toothbrush, soap, comb, and healthy food items. The central idea is for pupils to visually recognise and name these habits and associated items. Ensure the classroom is arranged to allow for simple movement and demonstration of actions like handwashing or brushing. Successful learning will be evident when pupils can point to, name, and mimic the actions of basic health habits with your guidance.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

REVISION: First-Term Health Habits

Good health habits help us stay strong and clean. We learnt about many important habits in the first term. Let’s remember them!

Important Health Habits to Remember:

  1. Washing Hands: We wash our hands with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet. This keeps away germs.
  2. Brushing Teeth: We brush our teeth in the morning and at night with a toothbrush and toothpaste. This makes our teeth clean and strong.
  3. Bathing: We take a bath every day with soap and water. This keeps our body clean and fresh.
  4. Combing Hair: We comb our hair to make it neat and tidy.
  5. Eating Healthy Food: We eat fruits, vegetables, and other good food to grow big and strong.
  6. Sleeping Well: We need to sleep enough every night to rest our bodies and minds.

Key Words

  • Clean – free from dirt.
  • Germs – tiny things that can make us sick.
  • Healthy – strong and well.
  • Soap – used to wash and clean.
  • Toothbrush – used to clean teeth.

Our Healthy Habits Song

Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”

Wash, wash, wash your hands,
Wash them clean with soap.
Rub, rub, rub them well,
Clean hands make us strong.

Brush, brush, brush your teeth,
Up and down and round.
Shiny, shiny teeth so bright,
Happy smiles all day.

Actions: For “Wash, wash, wash your hands,” mime washing hands. For “Brush, brush, brush your teeth,” mime brushing teeth.

💡 Teacher Guide for Using This Board Summary

How to teach the content: Introduce the revision by reminding pupils about “first-term learning.” Go through each health habit one by one, using the picture charts and real objects. Keep explanations very short and simple. Ask “What is this?” or “What do we do with this?” Encourage pupils to repeat the names of the habits and items.

What to show or demonstrate: Hold up picture cards or real objects (toothbrush, soap, comb). Demonstrate the actions for washing hands and brushing teeth. Show pictures of children eating healthy food and sleeping.

How to use the rhyme/song: Sing “Our Healthy Habits Song” together, encouraging pupils to join in with the actions. Repeat the song 2-3 times to help them learn the words and actions. Emphasise the actions for handwashing and teeth brushing.

How to use the video: Introduce the video as “a fun way to see how children stay clean and healthy.” Play the video, asking pupils to watch for actions they know. After watching, ask simple questions like “What did the children do?” or “What should we do to be healthy?” and encourage them to mimic actions seen in the video.

What to watch for: Observe if pupils can point to the correct pictures, attempt to name the items, and mimic the actions. Look for engagement during the song and video. Correct any misconceptions about how to perform the actions gently.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Teaching Skill: Engaging/Recalling

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils warmly and reminds them about the fun things they learned last term about keeping clean and healthy. “Good morning, children! Do you remember how we learned to keep our bodies clean and strong? Today, we will remember all those good habits!”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings and listen attentively.

Learning Point: Pupils are engaged and ready to recall previous learning.

Step 2: Revising Washing Hands

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Visual Aid/Demonstration

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows a picture chart of a child washing hands and a real bar of soap. “What is this? (Soap!) What do we do with soap? (Wash hands!) When do we wash our hands?” The teacher demonstrates simple handwashing actions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify soap, say “wash hands,” and mimic the handwashing actions.

Learning Point: Pupils recall the importance and action of handwashing.

Step 3: Revising Brushing Teeth

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Object Recognition/Guided Practice

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows a picture chart of a child brushing teeth and a clean toothbrush. “What is this? (Toothbrush!) What do we do with our toothbrush? (Brush teeth!)” The teacher guides pupils to mime brushing their teeth.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify the toothbrush, say “brush teeth,” and mime brushing their teeth with their fingers.

Learning Point: Pupils recall the importance and action of brushing teeth.

Step 4: Revising Other Habits (Bathing, Combing, Healthy Food)

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Picture Talk/Naming

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows picture cards for bathing, combing hair (with a real comb), and eating healthy food. “What is this child doing? (Bathing!) What do we do with this? (Comb hair!) What kind of food makes us strong? (Healthy food!)” The teacher encourages pupils to name the actions and items.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils point to and name the actions and items shown in the pictures and with the real comb.

Learning Point: Pupils recall various health habits and related items.

Step 5: Song and Video Reinforcement

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Auditory/Visual Reinforcement

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher leads pupils in singing “Our Healthy Habits Song” with actions. Then, the teacher plays the short video on healthy habits, asking pupils to watch carefully.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils sing the song with actions and watch the video, pointing to familiar actions.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce learning through song and visual media.

Step 6: Practical Application

Time: 2 minutes

Teaching Skill: Application/Repetition

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks pupils to stand up and collectively demonstrate “washing hands” and “brushing teeth” one more time. “Show me how you wash your hands! Show me how you brush your teeth!”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils stand up and demonstrate the handwashing and teeth brushing actions.

Learning Point: Pupils actively apply the learned actions.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 4–5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks pupils’ understanding through short questions and practical tasks.

  1. “Point to the picture of washing hands.”
  2. “What is this? (Holds up a toothbrush).”
  3. “Show me how you comb your hair.”
  4. “What kind of food should we eat to be strong?” (Shows pictures of healthy/unhealthy food and asks them to choose).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and demonstrate the required skill where appropriate.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 1 minute

Teaching Skill: Summarising/Encouraging

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher praises the pupils for remembering their health habits. “Well done, children! You remembered so many good ways to stay clean and healthy! Keep practising these habits every day!”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and respond with “Thank you, teacher!”

Learning Point: Pupils are encouraged to continue practising good health habits.

Lesson Keywords

  • Clean – free from dirt.
  • Healthy – strong and well.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who are struggling, use larger, clearer picture cards. Provide hand-over-hand guidance for mimicking actions. Repeat key words and actions more frequently. Focus on only 2-3 core habits initially.
