Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Before the lesson, gather real body care items like soap, sponge, towel, comb, toothbrush, and body cream. The central idea is for pupils to recognise these items and understand their simple use. Emphasize gentle and safe handling. Successful learning will be observed when pupils can point to, name, and imitate the use of at least three body care materials.

  • Towel: After bathing, we use a towel to dry our body. (Patting action)
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste: We put toothpaste on our toothbrush and brush our teeth to make them clean and strong. (Brushing action)
  • Comb/Hairbrush: We use a comb or hairbrush to make our hair neat and tidy. (Combing action)

Neat and tidy everywhere.

💡 Teacher Guide for Using This Board Summary

How to teach the content: Introduce each body care item one by one. Hold up the real object, say its name clearly, and show how it is used with simple, exaggerated actions. Encourage pupils to repeat the name after you and imitate the action. Use the picture cards/charts to reinforce recognition.

What to show or demonstrate: Show the actual soap, sponge, comb, toothbrush, etc. Demonstrate the actions of washing (hands, body), brushing teeth, combing hair, and applying cream. Emphasize gentle movements.

How to use the rhyme/song: Sing the “Clean Body Song” slowly and clearly, demonstrating the actions for each line. Repeat the song several times, encouraging pupils to join in with the actions and simple words. Praise their participation.

How to use the video: Introduce the video as a fun way to see children taking care of their bodies. Play the video once, then play it again, pausing to point out and name the body care items shown and the actions involved (e.g., “Look! They are brushing their teeth with a toothbrush!”). Ask pupils to imitate the actions they see.

What to watch for: Observe if pupils can correctly identify and name at least two items. Watch for their ability to imitate the simple actions. Correct any unsafe or incorrect handling gently, e.g., “We brush our teeth gently, not too hard.”

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Play-based Learning, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Songs and Rhymes, Picture Talk, Question and Answer, Manipulation of Objects, Repetition, Practical Activity.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Engaging/Motivation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them, “Who likes to be clean and smell nice?” The teacher then asks, “What do we use to make our bodies clean?”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond by raising hands, saying “Me!”, and may offer simple answers like “water” or “soap.”

Learning Point: Pupils are motivated and reminded of the importance of cleanliness.

Step 2: Identifying Body Care Materials (Part 1)

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Naming

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher brings out real soap and a sponge. The teacher holds up the soap and says, “This is soap. We use soap to wash our body.” The teacher then holds up the sponge and says, “This is a sponge. We use a sponge with soap to clean our body.” The teacher demonstrates a gentle washing action with each item.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils look at the objects, listen to the names, and try to repeat “soap” and “sponge.” They imitate the washing action.

Learning Point: Pupils identify and name soap and sponge, and understand their basic use.

Step 3: Identifying Body Care Materials (Part 2)

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Repetition

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher brings out a toothbrush and a comb. The teacher holds up the toothbrush and says, “This is a toothbrush. We use it to brush our teeth.” The teacher demonstrates brushing teeth. The teacher then holds up the comb and says, “This is a comb. We use it to comb our hair.” The teacher demonstrates combing hair.

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher leads the pupils in singing the “Clean Body Song” from the Board Summary. The teacher demonstrates the actions clearly and encourages pupils to sing along and perform the actions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils sing the song with the teacher and perform the actions for washing, brushing, and combing.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce learning of body care actions through song and movement.

Step 5: Picture and Video Reinforcement

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Visual Learning/Discussion

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows picture cards or posters of children using different body care items. The teacher points to each item and asks, “What is this?” and “What are they doing?” The teacher then plays the video clip, pointing out the body care items and actions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils point to items in pictures, try to name them, and watch the video, imitating actions shown.

Learning Point: Pupils connect real objects to pictures and video, enhancing recognition.

Step 6: Guided Practice and Application

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guided Practice/Observation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher places all the body care materials on a table. The teacher asks pupils, “Who can show me the soap?” or “Who can show me how to comb their hair?” The teacher guides and praises pupils as they attempt to identify and demonstrate.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils take turns pointing to requested items or imitating the actions when asked.

Learning Point: Pupils apply their knowledge by identifying and demonstrating the use of materials.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 4–5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks pupils’ understanding through short questions and practical tasks.

  1. Show me the soap.
  2. What do we use to brush our teeth? (Show toothbrush)
  3. Show me how you comb your hair.
  4. What is this? (Hold up a sponge)

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and demonstrate the required skill where appropriate.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils clap for themselves, repeat “clean and healthy,” and sing the song with enthusiasm.

Learning Point: Pupils consolidate learning and are encouraged to practice good hygiene habits.

Lesson Keywords

  • Soap – a material used with water to wash the body.
  • Sponge – a soft tool used with soap to clean the body.
  • Comb – a tool used to make hair neat.
  • Toothbrush – a brush used with toothpaste to clean teeth.
  • Towel – a cloth used to dry the body after bathing.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who are struggling, provide larger, more distinct real objects. Focus on identifying and naming just two key items (e.g., soap and comb) and practicing their actions repeatedly with hand-over-hand guidance. Use more one-on-one repetition of names.
  • Extension: For pupils who quickly grasp the concepts, encourage them to name additional body care items they use at home (e.g., hair cream, nail cutter – with supervision). Ask them to describe the colour or shape of the items. They can also lead the actions for the “Clean Body Song.”
