Definition of Disease
Disease in farm animals can be defined as any deviation from the normal state of health, leading to a disturbance in the normal functioning of the animal’s body. It can manifest as a structural or functional disorder affecting the animal’s well-being and productivity.
Disease-Causing Organisms (Pathogens)
Disease-causing organisms, also known as pathogens, are agents that can cause illness in farm animals. They include:
- Bacteria: Microscopic single-celled organisms that can cause diseases like Anthrax, Tuberculosis, and Brucellosis.
- Viruses: Extremely small infectious agents that replicate inside living cells, causing diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Newcastle Disease, and African Swine Fever.
- Fungi: Plant-like organisms that can cause skin diseases (e.g., Ringworm) and respiratory infections.
- Protozoa: Single-celled eukaryotic organisms that cause diseases like Coccidiosis and Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness).
- Parasites: Organisms that live on or in another organism (the host) and derive nutrients at the host’s expense. These can be:
- Endoparasites (Internal): Such as roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes, found in the digestive tract or other internal organs.
- Ectoparasites (External): Such as ticks, mites, lice, and fleas, found on the skin or external surfaces of the animal.
Factors Predisposing Farm Animals to Diseases
Several factors can increase a farm animal’s susceptibility to diseases. These predisposing factors weaken the animal’s immune system or expose it to pathogens more easily:
- Stress: Factors like overcrowding, poor handling, long-distance transportation, sudden changes in diet, or extreme weather conditions can weaken an animal’s immune system, making it more vulnerable to infections.
- Poor Sanitation and Hygiene: Unclean housing, contaminated feed and water, and inadequate waste disposal create environments where pathogens can multiply and spread easily among animals.
- Malnutrition/Poor Feeding: A diet lacking essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals can impair an animal’s immune response, making it less able to fight off infections. Overfeeding or feeding contaminated feed can also lead to health problems.
- Age: Very young animals (neonates) and very old animals often have weaker immune systems, making them more susceptible to diseases. Young animals may not have fully developed immunity, while older animals may have declining immune function.
- Breed/Genetic Susceptibility: Some breeds of farm animals are genetically more prone to certain diseases than others. Selective breeding for high production can sometimes inadvertently reduce disease resistance.
- Environmental Factors: Extreme temperatures (heat or cold), high humidity, poor ventilation, and drafts can cause stress and compromise an animal’s health, making it more susceptible to respiratory infections or heat stress.
- Immunosuppression: Certain diseases (e.g., viral infections) or medications can suppress an animal’s immune system, making it vulnerable to secondary infections.

- Changes in Behaviour: Lethargy, depression, restlessness, aggression, isolation from the herd/flock, or unusual postures.
- Changes in Appetite and Feed Intake: Loss of appetite (anorexia), reduced feed consumption, or refusal to eat.
- Changes in Body Temperature: Fever (elevated temperature) or hypothermia (abnormally low temperature).
- Changes in Faeces and Urine: Diarrhoea, constipation, blood in faeces, unusual colour or consistency of faeces, frequent urination, straining to urinate, or blood in urine.
- Nasal and Ocular Discharge: Runny nose, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, pus from eyes or nose, or swelling around the eyes.
- Skin Lesions and Coat Changes: Rashes, sores, scabs, hair loss, dull or rough coat, excessive scratching, or presence of external parasites.
- Swelling and Inflammation: Localized swelling in joints, limbs, udder, or other body parts.
- Lameness: Difficulty walking, limping, favouring a limb, or reluctance to move.
- Weight Loss/Emaciation: Progressive loss of body condition despite adequate feeding.
- Respiratory Distress: Laboured breathing, rapid shallow breathing, open-mouth breathing, coughing, or gasping.
