  2. Electro-ejaculation: Used for males that cannot or will not mount an AV. A low-voltage electrical probe is inserted into the rectum to stimulate the accessory glands and nerves, causing ejaculation. This method requires careful handling and is often used under sedation.
  3. Massage Method: Involves manual stimulation of the accessory sex glands and ampullae via rectal palpation to induce ejaculation. This method is less common for routine collection but can be used for certain species or individuals.

Steps in Artificial Insemination

The process of artificial insemination involves several critical steps to ensure high success rates:

  1. Heat Detection: Accurately identifying when the female animal is in oestrus (heat) is crucial, as insemination must occur during this fertile period.
  2. Thawing the Semen: A frozen semen straw is carefully thawed in a water bath at the recommended temperature (e.g., 35-37°C for 30-45 seconds).
  3. Loading the AI Gun: The thawed semen straw is loaded into the AI gun, and a clean plastic sheath is placed over it.
  4. Restraining the Animal: The female animal is properly restrained to ensure safety for both the animal and the inseminator, and to allow for precise semen deposition.
  5. Insemination: The inseminator inserts the gloved hand into the rectum to manipulate the cervix. The AI gun is then carefully guided through the vagina and cervix into the uterus, where the semen is deposited.
  6. Recording: Details of the insemination (date, time, sire, technician) are recorded for future reference and breeding management.
