Ectoparasites are parasites that live on the external surface of an animal host. They feed on blood, skin, or hair, causing irritation, anaemia, and can transmit diseases.
- Common Ectoparasites:
- Ticks: Blood-sucking arachnids, often found attached to the skin, especially in soft areas like ears, udder, and groin.
- Lice: Small, wingless insects that live on the skin and hair, causing itching and irritation.
- Fleas: Small, jumping insects that feed on blood, causing intense itching.
- Mites: Microscopic arachnids that burrow into the skin, causing mange.

- Careful visual inspection of the animal’s skin, hair, and ears.
- Parting the fur or wool to expose the skin.
