Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Before the lesson, ensure you have a small dustbin, some clean paper scraps to represent litter, and pictures of clean and dirty environments ready. The central idea for pupils is that keeping our surroundings clean makes them healthy and beautiful. Observe pupils’ willingness to participate in simple cleaning actions and their ability to identify a dustbin for waste.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Caring for Our Environment and Keeping It Clean

Our environment is everything around us – our home, our school, our playground, and our community. It is important to keep our environment clean.

Why we keep our environment clean:

  • A clean environment is healthy.
  • A clean environment is beautiful.
  • A clean environment makes us happy.

Ways to keep our environment clean:

  • Put all rubbish in the dustbin.
  • Do not throw waste on the ground.
  • Sweep the floor (at home, in class).
  • Pick up litter and put it in the bin.

Key Words

  • Environment – everything around us.
  • Clean – neat and free from dirt.
  • Rubbish – things we throw away.
  • Bin – where we put rubbish.

Clean Up Rhyme

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Lyrics:

Clean up, clean up, everybody,
Put the rubbish in the bin.
Clean up, clean up, everybody,
Let’s keep our environment clean.

Actions: Pupils pretend to pick up litter and put it into an imaginary bin, then clap hands.

💡 Teacher Guide for Using This Board Summary

How to teach the content: Begin by asking pupils what they see around them (their environment). Explain simply that “environment” means everything around us. Use the charts and posters to show examples of clean and dirty places. Discuss why a clean place is good and a dirty place is not good (e.g., “dirty places make us sick”). Focus on the two main ways to keep clean: putting rubbish in the bin and not throwing waste on the ground.

What to show or demonstrate: Show a dustbin and demonstrate how to put a piece of ‘litter’ (paper scrap) into it. Allow pupils to take turns demonstrating this action. Point to the key words on the board and say them clearly, having pupils repeat after you.

How to use the rhyme/song: Introduce the “Clean Up Rhyme” by singing it clearly. Encourage pupils to sing along and perform the simple actions of picking up and putting into a bin. Repeat the rhyme 2-3 times to help them learn it.

How to use the video: Introduce the video as a “Clean Up Song.” Play the video and encourage pupils to sing along and do the actions shown. After watching, ask pupils what the children in the video were doing to keep clean.

What to watch for: Observe if pupils understand the meaning of “environment” in a simple context, and if they can identify the dustbin as the place for waste. Watch for their participation in the practical demonstration and the song.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

  • Play-based Learning
  • Demonstration
  • Guided Practice
  • Songs and Rhymes
  • Picture Talk
  • Question and Answer
  • Practical Activity

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Engaging/Motivation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and leads them in a familiar welcome song. The teacher then asks pupils what they see around them in the classroom and outside the window.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings, sing the song, and point out things they see around them.

Learning Point: Pupils are engaged and begin to think about their surroundings.

Step 2: Understanding Our Environment

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explanation/Concept Introduction

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains simply that “our environment” means everything around us – our school, our home, our playground. The teacher shows pictures of different environments (e.g., a classroom, a compound).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, point to things in the pictures, and repeat “environment.”

Learning Point: Pupils understand the simple meaning of “environment.”

Step 3: Why Keep It Clean?

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Discussion/Visual Aid

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays charts showing a clean environment and a dirty environment. The teacher asks pupils which one looks better and why. The teacher explains that a clean environment is healthy and beautiful.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the charts, point to the clean environment, and say “clean is good.”

Learning Point: Pupils appreciate the importance of a clean environment.

Step 4: Ways to Keep It Clean – Discussion

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guiding/Eliciting Responses

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks pupils, “How can we keep our environment clean?” The teacher guides them to mention simple ways like “put rubbish in the bin” and “do not throw waste on the ground.” The teacher uses posters of children cleaning.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond with simple ideas and point to actions on the posters.

Learning Point: Pupils begin to identify practical ways to keep the environment clean.

Step 5: Rhyme and Practical Demonstration

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Repetition

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher introduces the “Clean Up Rhyme,” sings it with actions, and encourages pupils to join. The teacher then scatters a few clean paper scraps on the floor and demonstrates picking them up and putting them into the dustbin. The teacher invites pupils to do the same.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils sing the rhyme with actions. They take turns picking up paper scraps and putting them into the dustbin.

Learning Point: Pupils practice putting waste in the bin and reinforce the concept through song.

Step 6: Video Reinforcement

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Multimedia/Engagement

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher introduces a short video about cleaning up. The teacher plays the “Clean Up Song for Kids” video and encourages pupils to watch, sing along, and imitate the actions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils watch the video, sing along, and perform the clean-up actions.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce learning through visual and auditory engagement and active participation.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 4–5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks pupils’ understanding through short questions and practical tasks.

  1. “What is our environment?” (Point around the classroom)
  2. “Where should we put our rubbish?” (Point to the dustbin)
  3. “Show me how you put rubbish in the bin.” (Give a paper scrap to a pupil)
  4. “Is it good to throw rubbish on the floor?”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and demonstrate the required skill where appropriate.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 1 minute

Teaching Skill: Summarising/Reinforcement

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher praises the pupils for their participation and reminds them to always keep their environment clean at home and at school. The teacher ends with a cheer for a clean environment.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and participate in the cheer.

Learning Point: Pupils are encouraged to apply what they have learned daily.

Lesson Keywords

  • Environment – everything around us, like our school and home.
  • Clean – neat and tidy, with no dirt or rubbish.
  • Rubbish – things we throw away because we don’t need them anymore.
  • Bin – a container where we put rubbish.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who need extra help, the teacher can use larger pictures, provide more repetition of key words, and offer hand-over-hand guidance when demonstrating putting rubbish in the bin. Focus on identifying the bin and saying “bin.”
  • Extension: For pupils who grasp the concept quickly, the teacher can ask them to name another place they keep clean (e.g., their bed, their plate) or identify something else that makes the environment dirty (e.g., spilled water, mud).
