Lesson Content/Board Summary
Word Registers, Paragraphing, Adjectives, Diphthongs and Short Play
1. Word Registers
Word registers are specific vocabularies or terms used within particular fields or professions. They allow for precise communication among specialists in that area.
The following are examples of words in specific registers:
- Agriculture: farm, harvest, crop, soil, cultivate, yield, irrigation, fertilizer, livestock, drought.
- Medicine: doctor, patient, diagnose, prescription, surgery, symptoms, dosage, infection, vaccine, therapy.
2. Paragraphing
Paragraphing is the process of organising related sentences into distinct units called paragraphs. Each paragraph usually focuses on a single main idea, introduced by a topic sentence.
The following are important aspects of paragraphing:
- A paragraph should have a main idea or topic sentence.
- All other sentences in the paragraph should support or explain the main idea.
- New ideas should generally start a new paragraph.
3. Adjectives
An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. Adjectives provide more information about the qualities, quantity, or state of a noun or pronoun.
The following are functions of adjectives:
- Description: They describe the qualities of a noun (e.g., beautiful flower, tall building).
- Quantification: They indicate the quantity or number (e.g., many books, three apples).
- Specification: They point out specific items (e.g., this book, those cars).
Examples in sentences:
- The red car is fast.
- She bought five mangoes.
- He is a brilliant student.
4. Diphthongs
Diphthongs are “gliding” vowel sounds where the tongue moves from one vowel position to another within the same syllable. They are also known as double vowel sounds.
The following are common diphthongs in English:
- /aɪ/ as in ‘my’, ‘time’, ‘like’
- /eɪ/ as in ‘day’, ‘make’, ‘rain’
- /ɔɪ/ as in ‘boy’, ‘coin’, ‘join’
- /əʊ/ as in ‘go’, ‘boat’, ‘know’
- /ɪə/ as in ‘hear’, ‘near’, ‘fear’
- /eə/ as in ‘fair’, ‘chair’, ‘there’
- /ʊə/ as in ‘tour’, ‘poor’, ‘sure’ (less common in modern English)
5. Short Play
A short play is a brief dramatic work, typically with a limited number of characters and a concise plot. It is designed to be performed on a stage.
The following are essential elements and features of a short play:
- Characters: The people or beings who perform the actions.
- Dialogue: The conversations between characters.
- Setting: The time and place where the action occurs.
- Plot: The sequence of events in the play.
- Stage Directions: Instructions for actors and directors, usually in italics or parentheses.
- Language Features: Use of figurative language (metaphors, similes), specific diction, and tone.

Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and introduces the lesson by asking them about different types of words they use in specific situations (e.g., when talking to a doctor vs. a farmer). The teacher then briefly states that the lesson will cover various aspects of English including specific vocabulary, writing skills, grammar, pronunciation, and literature.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and listen attentively to the introduction.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for the day’s lesson and understand its scope.
Step 2: Word Registers
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher presents short passages related to agriculture and medicine. The teacher guides pupils to read these passages aloud and identify words specific to each field, explaining the concept of word registers.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils read the passages and identify specific register words related to agriculture and medicine.
Learning Point: Pupils learn to identify and understand words used in specific professional contexts.
Step 3: Paragraphing
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion/Organisation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher discusses the importance of organising main ideas correctly into paragraphs. The teacher provides a jumbled set of sentences and guides pupils to identify different ideas and arrange them into coherent paragraphs.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify main ideas from the jumbled sentences and work individually or in groups to organise them into paragraphs.
Learning Point: Pupils understand how to structure paragraphs effectively by grouping related ideas.
Step 4: Adjectives
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gets pupils to read passages and leads them to identify adjectives. The teacher explains the functions of adjectives and guides pupils to make sentences using various adjectives.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify adjectives in the passages, state their functions, and then construct sentences using different adjectives.
Learning Point: Pupils improve their grammatical accuracy by correctly identifying and using adjectives.
Step 5: Diphthongs
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Articulation/Repetition
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher produces materials highlighting target diphthong sounds (e.g., /aɪ/, /eɪ/, /ɔɪ/, /əʊ/). The teacher emphasises correct articulation movements and demonstrates how to produce the sounds.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen carefully, practise the articulation movements, and produce the diphthong sounds in words and short sentences.
Learning Point: Pupils enhance their listening and speaking skills by correctly articulating diphthongs.
Step 6: Short Play
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reading/Performance
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to read a selected short play. The teacher selects pupils to act out short scenes from the play and listens to their diction, guiding them to identify language features and major characters.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils read the play, act out selected scenes, and identify essential language features and major characters within the play.
Learning Point: Pupils develop an appreciation for drama and learn to identify literary elements in a play.
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- Mention two words from the register of medicine.
- What is the main purpose of paragraphing?
- Define an adjective and give two examples.
- Identify the diphthong sound in the word ‘boy’.
- List two essential language features of a short play.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.
Step 8: Conclusion
Time: 3 minutes
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarises the key points of the lesson, reinforcing the importance of vocabulary, writing, grammar, pronunciation, and literature. The teacher assigns pupils to write a short paragraph describing their favourite hobby, using at least three adjectives.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and copy down the homework.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their learning and are given an opportunity to practice at home.
Lesson Keywords
