Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Students have basic reading skills and can read simple passages in English.
Lesson Content/Board Summary
Reading: Line-by-Line Reading, Recall, and Review
Meaning of Line-by-Line Reading
Line-by-line reading is a slow and more concentrated way of reading a passage. It involves carefully going through the text section by section and paragraph by paragraph, paying close attention to every detail and meaning.
Meaning of Recall
Recall in reading means actively going over what has been read to remember and retain the information. It involves bringing to mind the main ideas, facts, and details from the passage without looking back at the text.
Meaning of Review
Review in reading means going over the previous steps of reading and recalling to check for understanding and retention. It involves re-examining the passage, comparing what was recalled with the original text, and clarifying any confusing points.

Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Engaging/Activating Prior Knowledge
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the students and asks them how they usually read difficult passages. The teacher then introduces the topic: “Reading: Line-by-Line Reading, Recall, and Review” as effective strategies for better comprehension.
Pupils’ Activity: Students respond to the teacher’s questions and listen attentively to the introduction of the new topic.
Learning Point: Introduction to reading strategies
Step 2: Explanation of Line-by-Line Reading
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the meaning of line-by-line reading as a slow and concentrated way of reading a passage in sections and paragraphs. The teacher demonstrates this by reading a short paragraph from a selected passage slowly, emphasising each sentence.
Pupils’ Activity: Students listen to the explanation and observe the teacher’s demonstration.
Learning Point: Meaning of line-by-line reading
Step 3: Guided Practice of Line-by-Line Reading
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher provides a short passage and guides students to practice line-by-line reading. The teacher asks them to read the passage slowly, paragraph by paragraph, and encourages them to pay attention to details.
Pupils’ Activity: Students read the provided passage line-by-line under the teacher’s guidance.
Learning Point: Practising line-by-line reading
Step 4: Explanation of Recall
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that recall means going over what has been read and retained. After the students have read a section, the teacher asks them to close their eyes or look away and try to remember the main points without looking back at the text.
Pupils’ Activity: Students listen to the explanation and attempt to recall information from the passage they just read.
Learning Point: Understanding reading recall
Step 5: Guided Practice of Recall
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: Using the same passage, the teacher asks students to read another section line-by-line. After reading, the teacher prompts them to recall specific details or the main idea of that section. The teacher provides questions to guide their recall.
Pupils’ Activity: Students practice recalling information from the passage in response to the teacher’s prompts.
Learning Point: Applying reading recall
Step 6: Explanation and Practice of Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Application
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that review means going over previous steps to check understanding. The teacher asks students to compare what they recalled with the actual text, correcting any forgotten details or misunderstandings. The teacher demonstrates how to quickly scan the passage to confirm information.
Pupils’ Activity: Students listen, then review their recalled information against the passage, correcting errors.
Learning Point: Steps of reading review
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- What is line-by-line reading?
- Explain what recall means in reading.
- Why is reviewing a passage important after reading?
- Demonstrate line-by-line reading of a short sentence.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Understanding reading strategies
Step 8: Note-Taking
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Writing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils/students to copy the essential Board Summary notes on line-by-line reading, recall, and review into their notebooks.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils/students copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.
Learning Point: Recording lesson notes
Step 9: Conclusion
Time: 0 minutes
Teaching Skill: Consolidation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher reminds students that regularly using line-by-line reading, recall, and review will significantly improve their reading comprehension and retention. The teacher encourages them to apply these strategies in all their subjects.
Pupils’ Activity: Students listen and acknowledge the importance of the reading strategies.
Learning Point: Reinforcement of reading skills
Continuous Assessment/Further Study
Type: Homework
Instruction: Read a passage from your English textbook (e.g., a story or an expository text). Apply the following strategies:
- Read the passage line-by-line, paying close attention to details.
- After reading, close your book and write down all the main points and details you can recall.
- Open your book and review the passage, comparing what you wrote with the actual text. Make any necessary corrections or additions.
Lesson Keywords
- Line-by-line reading – Slow, concentrated reading of a passage in sections.
- Recall – Remembering information from a text without looking at it.
- Review – Checking understanding by comparing recalled information with the text.
- Passage – A section or portion of a written work.
- Comprehension – The ability to understand what you read.
Differentiation
For struggling learners, the teacher will provide shorter, simpler passages and offer more direct guidance during the practice sessions, focusing on one strategy at a time. Faster learners will be given longer, more complex passages and encouraged to apply all three strategies independently, perhaps identifying specific facts and opinions as part of their review.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Teachers should prepare relevant and age-appropriate short passages before the lesson. Begin by engaging students with questions about their current reading habits. Clearly explain and demonstrate each strategy—line-by-line reading, recall, and review—before allowing students to practice. During guided practice, circulate among students to provide individual support and correct misconceptions. Encourage students to articulate what they have recalled and reviewed. Ensure students copy the Board Summary notes neatly after the main teaching and practice. Emphasise that these strategies are applicable across all subjects, not just English Language Studies.
