Principle of Operation of a Telephone
A telephone works by converting sound energy into electrical energy for transmission, and then converting the electrical energy back into sound energy at the receiving end. This process allows two people to communicate verbally over long distances.
- Transmitting End (Speaker’s Phone): When a person speaks into the microphone of a telephone, the sound waves cause a diaphragm inside the microphone to vibrate. These vibrations are then converted into varying electrical signals (analog signals) that correspond to the amplitude and frequency of the sound waves.
- Transmission: These electrical signals are sent through telephone lines (or wirelessly in the case of mobile phones) to the receiving telephone.
- Receiving End (Listener’s Phone): At the receiving telephone, the incoming electrical signals are fed into an earpiece (speaker). The earpiece converts these electrical signals back into sound waves, which the listener can hear. The earpiece also contains a diaphragm that vibrates according to the electrical signals, producing sound.
Main Sections of a Telephone
A typical telephone, whether landline or mobile, consists of several key sections that work together:
- Microphone (Transmitter): This converts sound waves from the speaker’s voice into electrical signals. It is usually located near where the user speaks.
